This taut, emotionally wrenching snapshot of both the mythologies and grim realities of war possesses useful reminders about self-deception and abuse of power, especially at a time when bellicose rhetoric and war cabinets seem to be the order of the day.
The film rarely feels static or stagy. It's a fine and memorable effort.

There are a lot of movies that tackled this theme maybe million times before. And the characters are by no means fresh or new. But it's the very limited time we get through that allowed the characters to flesh out. I cared about every single character in this movie. Of course, the acting has a major role in making the characters very easy to sympathize with. All the actor did a great job and all of them have their powerful moments. Asa Butterfield proved that he is a very good actor and that it's only his role choices that make him very underrated. But it's Sam Claflin who really shines in the role of Captain Stanhope. I liked his performance in My Cousin Rachel, but I think he gave his best performance ever in Journey's End. Using wobbly hand-held cameras was a great decision Saul Dibb made, it makes me feel that the movie shot in a second-person perspective and that makes me relate to the characters even more as I have always felt that I was standing with them in the battle area or as they were just talking. The production design is top notch.
Besides the familiarity of the story and the stereotypical characters, which aren't big deal, I think the ending is a bit rushed, it is so effective and moving though.

The first world war is one of the 20th century’s oldest, grimmest tales of futility and slaughter. Dibb and his excellent cast put new passion into it.
Dibb’s adaptation will have less of an impact if you aren’t seeing this story play out for the first time, but if you are seeing it for the first time, it’s probably going to break your heart.
Dibbs does a fine job bringing a nuanced, realistic visual style to this venerable tale of war’s cruel and colossal wastes, and his actors are all first-rate, with Bettany a special stand-out.
Perhaps the play’s overfamiliarity is the one thing holding this back in the end: you’re expecting it to cross the barrier from solid to gut-wrenching, and that never quite happens.
The character dynamics are still as rich as when Sherriff first realised them, and C Company’s supporting servicemen add a few complementary hues to this portrait of militarised despair.... And yet Dibb’s direction doesn’t leave the actors enough room to breathe.
This movie as mostly boring, even as a period piece it didn't get even the least bit interesting. Bettany is the standout, natch, everyone else lesser by ordinates.

Most of this film takes place in the cramped officer's quarters in the trenches during a fateful WW1 battle. Asa Butterfield is the new soldier who's assigned to be the eager baby-faced innocent. He encounters a kind Paul Bettany and a damaged Sam Clafin and they talk a lot. Judging from the continual claustrophobic encounters, it's obvious that this came from a play. The actors all get a chance for dramatic moments, but they don't add up to much impact. The director's one-note approach and the continuous despair get tiresome. Despite all the death and drama, this movie never builds to any emotional payoff.
