The show isn’t even close to fully formed yet--the relationships between characters are mere sketches, and the mélange of patients, interpersonal moments, and hospital politics is a bit of a jumble--but the foundation feels solid enough to hint that while this might not be the next ER, it’s certainly something that could grow into a fully realized, enjoyable show.

The politics are surprisingly complex ... That’s a lot of heavy lifting for a fluffy teen sci-fi romance, but so far the show acquits itself well, sticking the landing with its romantic moments and politically minded scenes in equal measure.

Spinning off an established show in order to up the chances of that happening is a fine impulse, but this Chicago Fire offshoot is not quite up to the task of creating something indelible just yet.

Gillies’ character is one for the ages, and although the actor’s portrayal of him is as wonderfully measured as ever, his actions here feel like the equivalent of a vampire Parent Trap situation, with Gillies just trying to keep his siblings together using whatever trickery he can. Yet, in spite of all of these concerns, it still feels like there’s a show here.

While it may not be the worst new show of the season, it feels like the least essential.
