    There's a different version of Dead of Summer in which having a character half-named after the Antichrist and half-named after the 20th century's most notorious occultist prophet would be part of a general wink-and-nudge approach to a slew of genre conventions. The actual version premiering on Freeform June 28 is not that fun, smart or creative, and not satisfyingly scary, mysterious or disturbing either.

    The pilot travels the globe, but doesn't look like it moved too far off the backlot. There's no "wow" factor at all. And perhaps that boils down why MacGyver is just unnecessary, rather than being explicitly awful.

    Through the two episodes I've seen, there are ample components that could be the basis for a good sitcom, and even the show's biggest flaw is not without potential, but the alignment is so out-of-sync that it's easier to imagine viewers tuning out at the first commercial break than sticking around for 13 or 22 episodes to see if Dr. Ken becomes the best, or even a better, version of itself.

    There are a couple of love triangles at work, but the characters have been written only in terms of metaphor and irony, so nobody has any chemistry, which is probably also an irony, though it's less likely to be intentional. Or maybe it is intentional? Flaked feels primarily like a writing exercise for Arnett and Chappell.
