I don't know why Tracey Ullman's State of the Union isn't funny. Maybe it's just that the whole thing comes across as too jaded, or maybe impersonating and skewering people also requires that the comic walk the fine line between funny and cruel. And honestly, cruel stops well short of knee-slapper.

Yes, it is all kind of dopey and has that "been there/ done that" feel. But Fillion is so right for the part and carries the show so well that he makes the show more fun than it deserves for an otherwise by-the-book procedural.

If "Walking Dead" weren't alive, up and taking a vacation to generate new blood, Steven Spielberg's Falling Skies would be the best current sci-fi series on TV.

The funniest thing about the show is that people think he's legit in every single persona. I personally couldn't believe that Edwin Meese, former Attorney General Dick Thornberg or General Brent Scowcroft would be idiotic enough to be lured into a formal interview with a guy in a giant yellow track suit. The dialogue is actually pretty darned good and kind of inside funny.

A sophomoric comedy about high school (and really aren't all high school comedies, er, sophomoric?) that supplies as many laughs as a whoopie cushion in a lecture hall.

All three actresses deserve better dialogue than they are given. But the clothes? They speak volumes.

Sci Fi has done once more what the networks seem very often to have forgotten how to do: make watching TV really, really fun again. ... It's fun in the way that "Ghostbusters" was fun - funny, silly, scary. [13 Jul 2001]

I know the whole thing sounds been-there-done-that dopey, but Wahlberg and Selleck are so charismatic that somehow, in their hand(cuffs), it all seems almost new. Yes, it's worth the watch.

Weirdly enough, every one of tonight's wannabe photos looks better than any photo of any of those pretty-but-average giantesses who "cycled" through Tyra Land before.... The most interesting women are the most trouble, of course.

Somehow the show ... works despite the unpersonality of supermodel Heidi Klum, whose delivery is flatter than Kate Moss' chest. ... But it's not about the host ... What makes "Project Runway" a winner is the contestants themselves. They have just the right mix of humility, arrogance, talent, lack of it, need, greed, drive and creativity to make their quests riveting. [30 Nov 2004]

While it sounds pedantic, downright corny, and done to death, Drop Dead Diva is actually fun, funny and sometimes and in some ways even touching.

The actors are all very good, particularly Moreno and Valentine Rodriquez who plays his pal, Ernie...It's not there yet - not by a long shot - but it's got potential. Chances are good that the producers will work it out. [27 Mar 2002, p.72]

It is so over the top--in such a fantastically bad-taste way--and so out-there crazy, that tonight's episode (at least) is every bit as good as those old soaps.

A show so unusual in its format and plot that it will rival both "Lost" and "24" in creativity and "The O.C." in its character development.

The best new network show of the season...It's bright, it's dark, it's stylized, it's realistic - in short, I haven't been this enthusiastic about a dramatic network show since "CSI" and haven't been as happy with an ABC show since "Alias."

The thing that does give this show its grounding is the acting. Dancy is a perfect, tortured soul; Fishburne is everyman with a brain; and Mads Mikkelsen is perfectly named. What is lacking, though, is any respite from the darkness.

Think Jack Bauer with excellent grooming. Or in Jack's case, with any grooming [in] Fox's entertaining new all-action-all-the-time series.
