The best gaming apps for your iOS device this month

Below, we run through the ten best new iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch games released within the past month. All titles are playable on all iOS devices unless otherwise indicated.

Buy from Apple1. Tiny Wings HD 92 iPad only
Action, $2.99, ages 4+, from Andreas Illiger

"It's remarkable that this revised edition of one of mobile gaming's brightest gems not only preserves the simplistic elegance of the original, but introduces new gameplay elements that shine just as brightly."

Last year's acclaimed iPhone game finally comes to the iPad in an HD version that adds some new gameplay modes (including multiplayer) in addition to the larger resolution.

From the Publisher: You have always dreamed of flying - but your wings are tiny. Luckily the world is full of beautiful hills. Use the hills as jumps - slide down, flap your wings and fly! At least for a moment - until this annoying gravity brings you back down to earth. But the next hill is waiting for you already. Watch out for the night and fly as fast as you can. Otherwise flying will only be a dream once again. Tiny Wings was chosen as the iPhone Game of the Year in App Store Rewind 2011 in Europe and many other countries.

  • Multiplayer: Play against your friends on a single iPad!
  • Simple but skillfull "one button" (ok... maybe "one tap") arcade game about the dream of flying
  • The world is changing every day - so it does in this game! Procedural generated graphics will make "tiny wings" look different every day you play
  • Upgrade your nest by fulfilling tasks
  • Three game modes: "Day Trip," "Flight School," and "Hill Party"
  • Play as the mama bird or one of her four children
  • 15 hand-designed levels in the new "Flight School" mode
  • iCloud support (even syncs your game between the iPhone & iPad versions)

Buy from Apple3. Great Big War Game 88
Turn-based strategy, $2.99, ages 12+, from Rubicon

"Great Big War Game is a standout among war games on any platform and an enormous iPhone title by any right."

This sequel to the cartoony strategy title Great Little War Game 84 offers an even longer single-player campaign while adding online multiplayer.

From the Publisher: A tap and swipe turn-based strategy game with a huge sense of humor, featuring funny cartoon military units set in a stunning fictional world. "Great Big War Game" is the much anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed "Great Little War Game". (See what we did there?) With a greatly expanded single player campaign, brand new online multiplayer and a whole raft of other cool new stuff, there's plenty to please that 2.5 million strong player base. New to the brand? Don't worry - there's a full in-game manual and good tutorials to ease you in. If you missed the original game, you can still play this one and find out where all those 5 star reviews came from.

Buy from Apple4. Nihilumbra 88
Platformer, $2.99, ages 9+, from Beautifun Games

"Nihilumbra is one of those games that are more about the emotional experience than the actual gameplay."

A truly unique platforming adventure, Nihilumbra is drawing praise for its art design and its somewhat gloomy storyline.

From the Publisher: Discover the beautiful world of Nihilumbra and join Born on his adventure to find himself whilst trying to escape from his inevitable curse. Born was created from the absolute nothingness: The Void. But somehow he seperates himself from the black emptiness and appears in the world. This is where his long odyssey begins, in which he will learn how to use the colors around him to gain powerful abilities and transform the world. However, his experiences come at a high price. The Void must be one. It seeks to reclaim him and will never stop chasing him, destroying everything in its path along the way.
To survive, Born will have to condemn the earth he walks to it's inevitable obliteration by The Void...

Buy from Apple5. Fieldrunners 2 88
Action/strategy, $2.99, ages 9+, from Subatomic Studios

"We had an absolute blast playing Fieldrunners 2, and recommend the title to any tower-defense fan. Even those who typically shy away from the genre will find a very different, and very enjoyable strategy title here."

This sequel to the acclaimed 2008 tower defense game Fieldrunners offers a ton of content and hours of gameplay.

From the Publisher: The fieldrunners are back! With legions of soldiers and a gaggle of new tricks, they're ready to conquer the globe. Or so they think! Our top scientists at SubaLabs have built a bleeding-edge arsenal of devastating weapons for any heroes willing to stop these dastardly invaders. Help your people by taking action - DEFEND THE WORLD! Call in airstrikes and set explosive traps to hit the enemies where it hurts. Over 20 new levels span the grassiest fields, driest deserts, sparkling cities, and even an infernal volcano lair! Challenge your mind with the exciting new gameplay styles in Puzzle, Sudden Death, and Time Trial levels. Are you ready to stop the fieldrunners once and for all? Join the defense, now!

Buy from Apple6. Outwitters 87
Turn-based strategy, free, ages 9+, from One Man Left

"This is an amazing game that is easy to get into, is fast-paced, yet still rewards strategy."

The makers of iOS classic Tilt to Live return with something completely different: a free-to-play strategy board game with online multiplayer.

From the Publisher: It’s a battle of wits against friends or strangers! Take turns maneuvering your troops in a race to destroy the enemy base. Will you side with the seafaring Scallywags, the robotic Feedback legion, or the snuggly-wuggly Adorables?

  • Take turns asynchronously, or pass the device
  • 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 mayhem!
  • Battle players of similar skill with League matchmaking
  • Use your Game Center account and friends list
  • A universal app with retina support

Buy from Apple7. Slydris 86
Action/puzzle, $1.99, ages 4+, from Radiangames

" It takes the basic little line clearing puzzle set-up and tweaks it just enough to give it a fresh feeling to make it feel new all over again. Not going to set the world on fire but definitely worth a look for friends of the genre."

A fresh take on the Tetris formula, this line-dropping game offers fast-paced, engaging action.

From the Publisher: Slydris is a unique and engaging puzzle game with a simple premise but deceptively deep gameplay:

  • Slide and drop blocks to create full lines of blocks.
  • Create combos of falling blocks and clearing lines to fill up your bomb meter faster.
  • Create a row of a single color for a color burster.
  • Other special blocks (Shatter, Upcoming, Locked, and Magnet) add gameplay variety and challenge.

The three modes are Infinite Mode, Zen Mode, and Survival Mode: In Infinite Mode, a new set of blocks drops after every move you make, so take as much time as you want. Clear 25 lines to move onto the next level. * Zen Mode functions similarly to Infinite Mode, but the difficulty is more dynamic, there are no achievements or scores to worry about, and your game will never end (in Infinite Mode, the game ends if the stack reaches the top row). In Survival Mode, you have 10 seconds to make as many moves as you can to clear the lines of blocks, then a barrage of blocks will drop, and the cycle begins again. Quick thinking and nimble fingers are required to do well. Slydris is a highly polished and customizable puzzle game for all ages. Select from 3 music tracks and dark or light backgrounds.

Buy from Apple8. Walking Dead: The Game 86 iPad 2+ or iPhone 4+
Adventure, $4.99, ages 12+, from Telltale

"If you're fond of The Walking Dead and want to play something that takes that source material seriously, and tells a great story while it does it, this game is definitely it. If you're looking for something much more involving from a joystick perspective, you might want to look elsewhere."

This is the first of what will eventually be five episodes (others will be sold separately) of an adventure based on Robert Kirkman's zombie comic series.

From the Publisher: This is not another shoot 'em up; it's a game that explores some very dark psychological places, revealing that the undead are not the only thing to be afraid of when society crumbles. In this brand new story, you are Lee Everett, a man given a second chance at life in a world devastated by the undead. With corpses returning to life and survivors stopping at nothing to maintain their own safety, protecting an orphaned girl named Clementine may offer him redemption in a world gone to hell. Experience a dark, visceral and emotional series where every action and decision you make can result in the story changing around you. This tailored experience means that your story could be very different to that of someone else.

Buy from Apple9. Where's My Perry? 84
Action/puzzle, $0.99, ages 4+, from Disney

"Where's My Perry? is an interesting extension of the Where's My Water? gameplay, packing the same addictive charm as the original, but it's hard to shake the been-there-done-that feeling."

Phineas and Ferb's Agent P (aka Perry the platypus) participates in over 80 physics-based puzzles in this sequel to Where's My Water? 90

From the Publisher: Where’s My Perry is a challenging physics-based puzzler where you need to use water in all its different forms, ice, steam and liquid, to solve the puzzle. Overflowing with intuitive controls, vibrant spy-themed graphics, and best of all, lasers, you will be immersed in the world of Agent P! Perry from Phineas and Ferb is no ordinary platypus, he's actually a semi-aquatic sleuth known as Agent P! And, you know, he SAVES THE WORLD! When summoned to headquarters by Major Monogram our fedora-rockin spy becomes stuck in his transportation tubes. Help Agent P get to headquarters for mission briefing by guiding water or steam to the generators powering the tubes. Water comes in many forms and you're going to experience them all. Cut dirt to guide water and steam across ice, dirt and rock in a variety of levels. The fluid physics are lifelike, but way more FUN!

Buy from Apple10. Darkside 83
Action, free, ages 9+, from Clockwork Pixels

"This is a fantastic twin-stick shooter, both in its free and paid versions, and if you have any kind of love for the genre then it cannot be resisted."

This free-to-play asteroid shooter adds two game modes for paying ($1.99) customers.

From the Publisher: Battle your way around 100's of massive 3D asteroids, fighting hostile aliens and protecting remote mining colonies. Watch out for orbiting chunks of rock, blast them into oblivion before they destroy the mining colonies. Try to stay on the sunlit side as much as possible, the dark side of these asteroids can be pitch black and full of danger. Luckily your ship is equipped with headlights! Darkside

  • 100's of fast paced levels packed with aliens.
  • Fly around massive asteroids in glorious 3D.
  • Ten awesome power ups of mass destruction.
