Animated and Family Films

How to Train Your Dragon
(Mar. 26)

Based on the children's book of the same name, this 3D computer-animated adventure from DreamWorks was written and directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, who made Lilo & Stitch 73 for Disney. The story centers on a viking society where fighting dragons is a way of life, until one teenage boy learns to befriend, rather than destroy, the creatures.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid
(Apr. 2)

A live-action adaptation of the best-selling illustrated novel series, Wimpy follows middle school student Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) over the course of a school year.

Babies
(Apr. 16)

Perhaps the most accurate title of 2010, the documentary Babies features exactly that and nothing more. The film tracks the first year in the life of four different infants, in different parts of the world (San Francisco, Tokyo, Mongolia, and Namibia).

Marmaduke
(June 4)

The long-running newspaper comic strip gets its first big-screen adaptation in this live-action/animation hybrid starring the voice of Owen Wilson. Please don't force them to make a sequel.

Despicable Me
(July 9)

A computer-animated comedy from Universal's new animation brand Illumination Entertainment, Despicable Me follows the rivalry between the world's two top-ranked supervillains. The promising vocal cast includes Steve Carell, Will Arnett, Jason Segel and Kristen Wiig.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice
(July 16)

In theory, this Jerry Bruckheimer-produced family adventure is based on the classic Mickey Mouse short in Disney's Fantasia. In reality, all that it shares is a title and a vague resemblance to the Goethe poem that served as its inspiration. It's a missed opportunity, really -- who wouldn't want to see Nicolas Cage play Mickey. Instead, Cage portrays a master sorcerer in present-day Manhattan who takes on a college student (Jay Baruchel) as his assistant.

Ramona and Beezus
(Aug. 13)

An attempt by Walden Media to launch a new franchise based on Beverly Cleary's beloved series of children's books, this comedy stars unknown child actor Joey King and is directed by Elizabeth Allen, whose only other film is 2006's Aquamarine 51.

Flipped
(Sep. 17)

Director Rob Reiner aims for a younger audience with this period tween romance (it's set during the late 1950s) based on Wendelin Van Draanen's he-said, she-said novel.

Guardians of Ga'Hoole
(Sep. 24)

This epic CGI animated fantasy based on the first three installments in Kathryn Lasky's children's book series about talking owls is the first attempt at a family film for 300 director Zack Snyder.

Alpha and Omega 3D
(Oct. 10)

This animated adventure from Lionsgate and little-known Crest Animation Productions centers on two wolves who have opposite personalities but must work together to reunite with their pack. (Overwhelmingly original, we know.) Hayden Panettiere and Justin Long provide voices.

MegaMind
(Nov. 5)

With a premise that, on the surface, sounds a lot like another 2010 animated release (Despicable Me), this DreamWorks computer-animated comedy (which is on its third title) centers on dueling supervillains. Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, and Tina Fey provide voices.

Rapunzel
(Nov. 12)

How has Disney not made this classic Brothers Grimm fairytale into a movie already? Mandy Moore voices the long-haired princess in this animated musical adaptation, which aims to be in the style of traditional Disney classics despite using computer animation. The 1960s rock-inspired score comes from composer Alan Menken.

Yogi Bear
(Dec. 10)

Dan Aykroyd provides the voice of Yogi, and Justin Timberlake that of Boo-Boo, in this live-action/CGI adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera animated series about picnic basket-stealing bears in Jellystone Park. Could it be this year's Avatar? (Hint: no.)

Who r you kidding about ECLIPSE??? You must live in another universe from us Twihards, who r already harassing for previews of Eclipse, and the New Moon DVD hasn't even been released yet. I note that no movie has dared to be released on the same date...It's a death wish for any movie to rival A TWILIGHT sequel...

Am I missing the point or is it not useful to have the trailers hosted on Hulu, when they are not accessible outside of the States?

How about Hulu introduces a mechanism to allow a subset of their content to be viewable worldwide, or Metacritic sticks to YouTube.... assuming of course, that the content owners want audiences worldwide to see the trailers.

Oops, did some research: apparently there was a made for TV one.

    Still, could be cool

No Machete? That looks like one of the best.

I could see Zookeeper being like Paul Blart Mall Cop, which is fine with me; that was an entertaining movie and the better of the two mall cop movies of 09.

And why doesn't Disney make a Tower of Terror movie?
