Director Jeff Nichols' follow-up to Take Shelter wasn't quite as acclaimed, though most critics liked the film. Set in the South, Mud's coming-of-age story centers on 14-year-old Ellis (Tye Sheridan from The Tree of Life) and his best friend, Neckbone (Jacob Lofland). They encounter Mud, a felon played by Matthew McConaughey who is hiding out on an island in the Mississippi River. The boys eventually decide to help Mud reunite with his girlfriend Juniper, played by Reese Witherspoon. Also starring is Nichols regular Michael Shannon, plus Sam Shepard, Sarah Paulson, Ray McKinnon, and Joe Don Baker.

Director Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy) adapted his own graphic novel for this sci-fi thriller starring Tom Cruise stars as a drone repairman in the year 2073, when Earth is almost entirely abandoned after being devastated by war. There, he rescues a woman (Andrea Riseborough) from a downed spacecraft and runs afoul of resistance forces (led by Morgan Freeman); Olga Kurylenko, Melissa Leo, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau also star. Critics praised the look of the film—and it boasts a score by French electronica band M83—but many also found it unoriginal and weak in the story department.

Director Walter Salles’ (Central Station, The Motorcycle Diaries) attempt to adapt Jack Kerouac’s unadaptable novel was partially successful, at best. The semi-autobiographical story follows Kerouac stand-in Sal Paradise (Sam Riley) as he adventures across America with his pal Dead Moriarty (a stand-in for real-life friend Neal Cassady, played in the film by Garret Hedlund). Also starring is Kristen Stewart as Moriarty's teen bride Marylou, Viggo Mortensen as Old Bull Lee (based loosely on William S. Burroughs), and Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, Terrence Howard, Alice Braga, Steve Buscemi, and Elizabeth Moss. Critics found the film hampered by a lack of plot.

Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance and star Ryan Gosling re-team for a more ambitious drama starring Gosling as a pro motorcycle racer who puts his bike skills to criminal use to earn extra cash after he learns he has a son. Those illicit pursuits cause him and his family to cross paths with a cop (Bradley Cooper), who also has a young son with his wife (Rose Byrne). Ben Mendelsohn and Ray Liotta take supporting roles, and Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle) provides the score.

If you found Terrence Malick's previous film (The Tree of Life) a bit lacking in the plot department, then his latest meditative work isn't going to win you over; as the latter's star Ben Affleck said last year, the new film "makes The Tree of Life look like Transformers." The story, such as it is, centers on a man (Affleck) torn between two women: Marina (Olga Kurylenko), a single mother who returns with him to Oklahoma from Paris, and Jane (Rachel McAdams), a former flame. Booed at the Venice Film Festival last fall, the quasi-experimental film provoked a mixed response from critics, though even the reviewers who hated the film admired the cinematography.

Robert Redford directs this thriller about a journalist's pursuit of a former Weather Underground activist; the screenplay comes from Lem Dobbs (Haywire, The Limey), and Redford himself stars alongside Shia LaBeouf, Susan Sarandon, Anna Kendrick, Brit Marling, Stanley Tucci, and Nick Nolte. The film is based on Neil Gordon's novel of the same name, and critics liked it only slightly better than Redford's other recent directorial efforts (i.e., not all that much).

Getting an early jump on White House Down this spring was the year's other terrorists-target-the-president thriller, though neither one seemed to impress critics or moviegoers. This one stars Gerard Butler as the only Secret Service agent who can save the president (Aaron Eckhart) from capture after an attack by North Korean agents. Antoine Fuqua's first film in three years (after several aborted projects) also stars Morgan Freeman, Dylan McDermott, and Angela Bassett.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Amour 94 Add to Netflix Queue

One of the best-reviewed films of 2012 (behind only Zero Dark Thirty), this Cannes Palme d'Or winner is just the latest critical hit from provocative director Michael Haneke (The Piano Teacher, Caché (Hidden), The White Ribbon). The drama takes an unflinching look at the love between an elderly couple: Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant), and his sickly wife Anne (Oscar nominee Emmanuelle Riva). Amour earned five Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture), and it won in the foreign language category.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Epic 52 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Released earlier this summer, this so-so animated family film comes from the studio behind the Ice Age series and is based on a children's book by William Joyce. Amanda Seyfried voices the movie’s heroine, who gets transported to the world of the Leaf Men and joins their efforts to keep peace in the forest despite the meddling of Christoph Waltz’s evil Mandrake. Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson, Aziz Ansari, Chris O’Dowd, and Beyoncé Knowles round out the cast.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Scary Movie 5 11 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

The lowest-scoring movie of 2013 so far (among films with at least seven reviews), Scary Movie 5 is the latest (and worst) installment in the horror spoof series, bringing to an end a halcyon seven-year period in which the world was free from Scary Movie films. Past cast members Anna Faris and Regina Hall wisely steered clear of this one, though Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan show up, if that helps.

posterBlu-ray and DVD The Great Gatsby 55 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel will lose one of its three dimensions—we won't say which one—if you watch it at home, though many critics found it one dimensional to begin with: all spectacle, no substance. (Then again, many critics quite enjoyed the spectacle.) The strong cast features Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, and Joel Edgerton, and it's certainly not the worst Gatsby adaptation ever filmed.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Pain & Gain 44 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

While every Michael Bay movie is in some ways a comedy, Pain & Gain is his first in quite some time to seek laughs intentionally. Shot on miniscule (by Bay standards) $25 million budget, the action-comedy centers on a group of bodybuilders at a Florida gym who hatch a plan to kidnap and ransom one of the gym's wealthy customers, only to find their scheme go horribly wrong. (It's based on a true story.) Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, and Anthony Mackie provide the muscle, Tony Shalhoub is the unfortunate victim, and Rebel Wilson, Ed Harris, Rob Corddry, and Ken Jeong also star. It may not have been a good fit for Bay; more than one reviewer panned the result as "tone-deaf."
