posterBlu-ray and DVD About Time 55 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

The latest rom-com from writer-director Richard Curtis (Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral) puts a sci-fi spin on the genre, centering on a young man (Domhnall Gleeson) who discovers that he can travel backward in time to re-do portions of his life—a trait he inherited from his father (Bill Nighy) and one that he uses (with great complexity) to woo a woman (Rachel McAdams). Critics were lukewarm-to-positive on the film—which some compared (unfavorably) to Groundhog Day—but it was a hit internationally, if not in the U.S.

Matthew McConaughey continued his impressive run of late in this story of Ron Woodroof, who was diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1986. Unhappy with the medications available in the United States at the time, Woodroof smuggled in drugs from from all over the world and set up a network for other HIV-positive people (like transsexual Rayon, played by a widely praised Jared Leto) to buy them. McConaughey lost a well-publicized 50 pounds to play the hard-living Woodroof, and the result was his first career Oscar nomination. Leto was nominated as well, and the film earned six Academy Award nominations altogether, including best picture.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Escape Plan 49 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Put Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone together as leads in an action film, and what could possibly go wrong? Nothing, if the year is 1993; two decades later, and it's more of an iffy proposition, as evidenced by last year's Escape Plan. While decent foreign grosses prevented the film from being a commercial failure, critics found the prison break thriller fairly brainless and generic.

posterBlu-ray and DVD All Is Lost 87 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Think of it as Gravity at sea. Writer-director J.C. Chandor’s follow-up to his 2011 debut Margin Call features a cast of one: Robert Redford, who plays a man struggling to survive a solo yacht voyage in the Indian Ocean. The nearly dialogue-free film focuses on his efforts to save his boat and himself after an accident cripples the ship, relying on Redford as an actor and film icon to connect with the audience. Though Redford didn't receive the Oscar nomination many were predicting—the actor blames distributor Roadside Attractions for failing to publicize the film—critics had nothing but praise for All Is Lost and Redford's performance.

posterBlu-ray and DVD The Counselor 48 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Take a Pulitzer Prize-winning author’s first original screenplay, attach a respected director whose last film was considered a disappointment by many, and add a cast that includes Michael Fassbender (one of the highlights of that disappointing film), Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, and Cameron Diaz, and the result is ... one of the most divisive films of 2013. Ridley Scott directs Cormac McCarthy's story about a lawyer (Fassbender) who learns that no one dabbles in the drug trade. In a role less menacing than his previous turn in the McCarthy adaptation No Country for Old Men, Bardem plays the man with the connections, while Pitt plays Fassbender’s guide to selling drugs across the border. Instead of playing her husband’s girlfriend, Cruz pairs up with Fassbender, while Diaz, in full feline mode, stands by Bardem. Critic grades ranged from 0 to 100 (and everywhere in between); some put it on their year-end top 10 lists, while others clearly found it an outright failure.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Ender's Game 51 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Gavin Hood's (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) adaptation of Orson Scott Card's award-winning science fiction novel tells the story of Ender Wiggin (Hugo’s Asa Butterfield), a young man recruited to Battle School, where he trains to fight an invading alien race known as Formics. After he impresses Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford), Ender is promoted to Command School, where he trains under Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley) and prepares to lead Earth’s fleet into battle. Hailee Steinfeld stars as another recruit, Abigail Breslin plays Ender’s sister, and Viola Davis co-stars as a military psychologist. Critics found the result somewhat lifeless, and audiences stayed away; Ender's Game ended 2013 as one of the year's biggest box office bombs.

posterBlu-ray and DVD The Returned: Season 1 92 Add to Netflix Queue

(Release rescheduled from January.) Known as Les Revenants when it aired on French TV in 2012, The Returned was yet another critical success for Sundance Channel in 2013, earning the highest Metascore of any new series last year. Though the drama depicts a world where the dead come back to life, this definitely isn't The Walking Dead; these aren't quite zombies, but normal-seeming humans who are just as confused about coming back to life as the townsfolk who welcome them back. The mystery (which involves more than just the return of the dead) unfolds over eight episodes (subtitled in English), and a second season will go into production this winter.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Blue Is the Warmest Color 88 Add to Netflix Queue

Abdellatif Kechiche's nearly three-hour lesbian coming-of-age drama about the experience of first love between Adele (Adèle Exarchopoulos) and Emma (Léa Seydoux), an adaptation of Julie Maroh’s graphic novel, has been a flashpoint for the debate over gay rights in France, while also stirring a critical debate about the portrayal of sex in film. (An explicit sex scene takes up about ten minutes of screen time, leading to an NC-17 rating in America). Controversy aside, Blue Is the Warmest Color was a huge hit with critics—especially for the performances of the two young stars—winning the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes festival and collecting better reviews than any other foreign-language film last year. Though this is a Criterion Collection release, there aren't a ton of extra features; those will come later in a special edition (also from Criterion).

posterBlu-ray and DVD Gravity 96 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Think of it as All Is Lost in space. Both sci-fi thriller and technical marvel, Gravity stars Sandra Bullock as a specialist on her first space voyage who must scramble repeatedly to save her life when a satellite repair mission goes spectacularly wrong. George Clooney co-stars as a veteran astronaut on the same mission. Director Alfonso Cuarón’s first film in seven years (following Children of Men) proved to be one of last year's biggest successes both critically and commercially, finishing 2013 with the second-highest Metascore (behind 12 Years a Slave), collecting 10 Academy Award nominations (including best picture), and earning more than $680 million worldwide.

posterBlu-ray and DVD King of the Hill (1993) 85 Add to Netflix Queue

One of Steven Soderbergh's finest movies, the 1993 drama King of the Hill has somehow avoided an appearance on DVD—an omission that finally gets corrected this week with Criterion Collection's DVD/Blu-ray release. Based on A. E. Hotchner's memoir, Soderbergh's third feature is a coming of age tale set in Depression-era St. Louis and stars a young Jesse Bradford along with Karen Allen, Spalding Gray, and Elizabeth McGovern. (You'll also spot Adrien Brody and Katherine Heigl in early roles.) This Criterion set also includes Soderbergh's 1995 thriller The Underneath, which is also making its first proper appearance on DVD. All Soderbergh completists need now is a DVD release of Kafka (which is reportedly in the works).

posterBlu-ray and DVD Nebraska 86 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Alexander Payne’s latest road trip—this one, in black-and-white, and more drama than comedy—follows an alcoholic sliding toward senility (Bruce Dern) and his estranged son (Will Forte) as they travel from Billings, Montana, to Lincoln, Nebraska, in order to collect a $1 million sweepstakes prize. While Payne has taken to the road before in About Schmidt and Sideways, this is the first time he has not penned the script, which comes instead from first-time screenwriter Bob Nelson. The result was six Academy Award nominations, including one for Payne, one for Dern (who won the best actor prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival), another for his co-star June Squibb, and one for best picture.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Thor: The Dark World 54 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

The first Thor movie was not one of the better Marvel movies, scoring and grossing less than most of the other recent entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This sequel fared slightly worse with critics, but collected an impressive $633 million worldwide. Veteran TV director Alan Taylor (Game of ThronesThe Sopranos) takes over directing duties from Kenneth Branagh to tell the continuing story of Thor as he battles Malekith the Accursed (Christopher Eccleston) and his army of Dark Elves. Returning to help Thor are his mother and father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and Frigga (Rene Russo), and pals Heimdall (Idris Elba), Volstagg (Ray Stevenson), Sif (Jaimie Alexander), and Fandral (now played by Zachary Levi). Natalie Portman is back (and in danger) as Jane Foster, but at least she gets to visit Asgard and punch Loki.
