posterDVD The Up Series

In 1964, a British television network brought together a group of 14 children—then, aged 7, and selected to represent a variety of socioeconomic groups—for a documentary called Seven Up!. Every seven years since that time, director Michael Apted has gathered those same individuals (at least, the ones still willing to participate) for a new film, with many of the recent chapters screening theatrically in the United States and earning widespread praise. This new box set collects all of the films made to date, including the most recent installment, 56 Up, which is also released separately on DVD this week.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Admission 48 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Admission boasts two likeable stars in Tina Fey and Paul Rudd (and a strong supporting cast that includes Lily Tomlin, Michael Sheen, Wallace Shawn, and Gloria Reuben) but gives them only middling material to work with. Based on Jean Hanff Korelitz's novel about a Princeton admissions officer who encounters a gifted young student who may be tied to her past, the film comes from director Paul Weitz, whose last positively reviewed film came almost a decade ago.

posterBlu-ray and DVD The Host 35 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Well, we can safely say it's not another Twilight. Based on Stephenie Meyer's novel of the same name, The Host is a futuristic sci-fi romance set in a world where parasitic aliens called Souls have infiltrated the bodies and minds of most humans, but not that of a rebellious young woman named Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan), who converts her alien occupier, Wanderer, to her own cause. Max Irons plays Melanie's boyfriend (when she was fully human) while Jake Abel and Diane Kruger appear in supporting roles. Andrew Niccol (In Time, Gattaca) directs. Critics found it tedious and silly, while audiences failed to find it at all.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Spring Breakers 63 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Perhaps the most mainstream film yet from director Harmony Korine (that's not saying much, given that his filmography includes Gummo and Trash Humpers), Spring Breakers stars Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Rachel Korine, and Ashley Benson as four girls gone wild whose idea of Florida spring break fun involves a crime spree; James Franco also stars. Critics were divided, with some finding it trash and others, treasure.

posterBlu-ray and DVD 42 62 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

A surprise hit earlier this year, this biopic from director Brian Helgeland (best known for writing the screenplay for L.A. Confidential) stars Chadwick Boseman as Brooklyn Dodgers great Jackie Robinson, the first athlete to break Major League Baseball's color barrier. Harrison Ford co-stars as Branch Rickey, the Dodgers executive who signed Robinson. Critics generally liked the film, though some found it too formulaic.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Orphan Black: Season 1 73

If you didn't watch BBC America's new series—and, given the miniscule ratings, we're guessing you didn't—then you missed out on one of the most thrilling and original series debuts this year, and certainly one of the better sci-fi shows currently on television. More importantly, you missed a stunning performance from relative newcomer Tatiana Maslany, who stars as multiple identical-looking characters—each with such distinctive personalities that you may forget that they are being played by the same actress—who are clones. (How and why they came to be is one of the show's underlying mysteries, and there is no shortage of plot twists throughout these 10 episodes.) A second season is coming next year, so there's plenty of time to get on board.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Trance 61 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

After taking a break to direct the opening ceremony of last summer's Olympics in London, Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle returned to filmmaking with Trance, a trippy, stylized, and kinetic crime thriller compared by some critics to Boyle's debut Shallow Grave (the two noir-ish films share a screenwriter, John Hodge, although Trance is a remake of a 2001 British TV movie). James McAvoy stars as an art auctioneer who steals a valuable painting with the help of a gang of criminals, only to take a blow to the head and forget where he stashed the painting. The criminals send him to a hypnotherapist (Rosario Dawson) in an attempt to restore his memory, and the result is a rather complex structure (too much so, according to some critics) vaguely reminiscent of (though inferior to) Inception.

posterBlu-ray and DVD G.I. Joe: Retaliation 41 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

This long-delayed 3D sequel to 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra 32 earned slightly better (though still mostly lousy) reviews but performed less well at the box office. The cast has been beefed up with the additions of Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, and RZA, while Step Up 3-D director Jon M. Chu takes over for Stephen Sommers.
