Paramount got more bang for its buck than any other studio in 2009. While it released the fewest number of films -- just 13 -- out of the six major studios, Paramount's average gross for those films was $112.6 million, a number surpassed by no one last year.

That stellar per-film average translated into almost $1.5 billion in domestic releases, good for a nearly 14% market share and second place among all studios. Paramount's domestic success didn't translate as well overseas, however; hits like Star Trek fared poorly in foreign markets, and the studio finished in fifth place in overseas receipts (after a first-place finish in 2008).

Most of Paramount's releases in 2009 were DreamWorks productions, but that will change in 2010, since Paramount's distribution deal with DreamWorks is reaching its end date. (Beginning later this year, Disney's Touchstone unit will handle distribution for DreamWorks live-action films, although Paramount will continue distributing films from DreamWorks Animation).

Thanks in large part to those DreamWorks titles, Paramount's overall film quality -- though not stellar -- was near the top of all major studios. The studio notched two "great" titles (with scores above 81) -- Star Trek and Academy Award contender Up in the Air -- and managed to release only two truly bad movies all year. And those twin critical failures -- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra -- were still box office successes.

Congrats to Warner. It's great to see some high Metascoring films (esp. The Hangover) do well at the box office. It's great to see the quality breakdown juxtaposed with the box office results.

This is fascinating. The color-coded numbers, the great stats--I'm thoroughly enjoying the new MetaCritic. As for the actual stats, I was surprised by Weinstein and Fox Searchlight. I thought they both put out mostly better than average movies. Guess not.

Wow! I'm blown away by this amazing report. Keep them coming.
