Sony Pictures, which releases films under the Columbia, TriStar and Screen Gems labels, finished in third place for the second consecutive year, though it collected almost $200 million in additional domestic receipts compared to 2008. The studio also performed will internationally, taking in more than $2 billion from foreign box offices for the first time thanks in part to massive global hits like Michael Jackson's This Is It and 2012.

Domestically, Sony had five films break the $100 million barrier, although none of those films landed in the year's top 10, and only two (the aforementioned 2012, plus the unlikely January comedy hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop) placed in the top 20.

Although five of the studio's films received mostly positive welcomes from critics -- including Sony's best-reviewed film of the year, District 9 -- Sony released more bad movies than any other studio. Nine (43%) of the studio's 2009 releases received mostly negative reviews, and only one other major distributor (Fox) finished the year with a lower average Metascore than Sony's 47. The year's critical casualties included a number of abysmal comedies, including The Pink Panther 2, Year One, The Ugly Truth and Did You Hear About the Morgans?

Congrats to Warner. It's great to see some high Metascoring films (esp. The Hangover) do well at the box office. It's great to see the quality breakdown juxtaposed with the box office results.

This is fascinating. The color-coded numbers, the great stats--I'm thoroughly enjoying the new MetaCritic. As for the actual stats, I was surprised by Weinstein and Fox Searchlight. I thought they both put out mostly better than average movies. Guess not.

Wow! I'm blown away by this amazing report. Keep them coming.
