The only studio that could top Warner Bros.' record-setting box office haul in 2009 turned out to be ... Warner Bros. The company dominated both foreign and domestic box offices in 2010 to earn a record $4.8 billion in grosses worldwide, even as Warner's domestic market share fell from 19.9% in 2009 to 18.2% last year.

Those numbers were aided by several major hits for WB last year, most notably the latest Harry Potter installment, which earned $292 million in the U.S. and a whopping $945 million worldwide. The distributor's biggest domestic hit was Christopher Nolan's Inception, which earned a few hundred thousand more than Harry Potter in the States and also secured eight of Warner's 12 Oscar nominations this year. And their Clash of the Titans remake proved to be a global success, while the romantic ensemble comedy Valentine's Day was possibly the studio's most surprising major hit of 2010.

But Valentine's Day was unfortunately representative of another trend for Warner Bros. in 2010: bad movies. After a 2009 in which just six WB releases -- fewer than a quarter of the studio's films -- received good reviews, only five 2010 movies were liked by critics, and Warner's average Metascore dropped over three points to a lousy 48.7. Metacritic users were also less fond of Warner Bros. releases last year than they were the year before. And though Warner still made money on some of these films, like the previously mentioned Valentine's Day and the oft-ridiculed but still globally successful Sex and the City 2, there were a few duds that critics hated and audiences avoided like the plague. The most notable of these was Warner's clear-cut bomb of the year, the sci-fi Western Jonah Hex, which eked out just over $10 million worldwide against a production budget of $47 million. The few people who did see that movie didn't like it; Hex was also the Warner Bros. release most hated by Metacritic users last year.

Where does Focus Features fit into this?

Tough year for Universal.... again! Who the heck is picking movies over there. There's got to be one dude in a little bungalow - like Tim Robbins' character in "The Player" who greenlights movies. Seriously - an abysmal job. Then again, this year truly sucked for movies on the whole. The King's Speech is the favorite for best picture? Wow. Good little flick - heartwarming, but it didn't stun me with its greatness by any stretch. I put it all on these movie studio execs. Pick better movies to make!
