Summary of 2010 Films
Metascore Breakdown
Good / So-So / Bad:
Quality: Performance:
D D+

What can we say? We like your studio tour, but your movies? Not so much. For 2009, we assigned the studio grades of D+ and D, and Universal managed to match those marks again last year, improving its box office performance slightly while releasing an even worse lineup of films.

The animated Despicable Me was one of Universal's few bright spots last year, becoming a genuine (and quite profitable) global hit and also earning the studio its best reviews of 2010. But only Little Fockers and Robin Hood also managed to exceed the $100 million mark domestically, and the former is easily the worst-performing film in the Fockers trilogy, while the latter isn't quite the hit that it seems when you consider that production costs alone were around $200 million. And while Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was a generally well-liked cult hit, it was just that: a cult hit; early hype and a $60 million production budget means that the film was a major failure by earning less than $50 million worldwide. (And the less said about MacGruber, the better.)

A Metascore average of 49.3 in 2009 dropped to 45.6 last year, with 3 in every 5 Universal releases earning a Metascore below 50 in 2010. Here's hoping that Universal's new corporate overlords (better known as Comcast) can turn things around in a hurry.

Where does Focus Features fit into this?

Tough year for Universal.... again! Who the heck is picking movies over there. There's got to be one dude in a little bungalow - like Tim Robbins' character in "The Player" who greenlights movies. Seriously - an abysmal job. Then again, this year truly sucked for movies on the whole. The King's Speech is the favorite for best picture? Wow. Good little flick - heartwarming, but it didn't stun me with its greatness by any stretch. I put it all on these movie studio execs. Pick better movies to make!
