Think like a critic

Image

As we do each year at this time, we are asking our users to predict the final Metascores for 30 of this summer's most notable releases. At the end of the summer, we'll compare your guesses to the actual numbers, much like we did in 2012, 2011, and 2010.

Make your predictions for each movie below. Voting will close at the end of the day on Sunday, April 28th, and we'll reveal your predictions in our giant Summer Movie Preview later that week.

If the poll does not appear above, please go here to enter your predictions.

don't forget, any movie starring pegg and frost directed by wright has never gotten a metascore lower than 76! always bet on that combo!

Elysium could be good but will probably be another oblivion, same with pacific rim. Iron man 3 I think will surprise a lot of people. Man of Steel and Star Trek Into Darkness are both gonna be really good. The only movie on here that I think has a chance of breaking 80 is the Great Gatsby because Leonardo just doesn't star in bad movies anymore, not that he really ever did. I will be very surprised if Grown ups 2 gets past 10.

I agree about the mid 50s (@Happymonk) but "comparison ranking" is sure to push a few into the 80s and low 90s (my money's on everything superhero/sci-fi), because critics are as guilty as anyone of playing off of the disappointment of X in favor of Y. Plus the press junkets and the reality that if everyone is paid by someone and owned by someone bigger, there's a lot of money spent to boost ticket sales, and for those who believe that a high Metacritic score will do that... Well, basically I'll bet no movie that cost over $175m will get less than an 80 on Metacritic, by marketing purchase power alone. And even without that there's the guaranteed dozens of critics who will elevate numbers with vague praise like "great for a summer action flick" which, come on. That's not praise, it's justification for a guilty pleasure, but you can't fault Metacritic's inscrutible, supposedly lopsided algorithms for turning it into an 81 instead of a 79.

I'm guessing none of these films even hit the 80 mark, the closest will be Monster's University or Star Trek Into Darkness. Many of these films will hit the mid 50s only a couple will get worse than 40 (which is good). I base this purely on the fact that film critics are often too harsh.

I think that the best movies of 2013 are going to be Elysium, Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim, and my favorite, Man of Steel
