Six Picks for the Week of April 25-May 1

Steve Carell's final episode of The Office
Special 52-minute episode airs Thursday at 9pm on NBC

After seven seasons of playing Scranton, PA-based Dunder Mifflin boss Michael Scott, Steve Carell is saying goodbye. Airing Thursday, the super-sized episode “Goodbye Michael” should deliver big heartfelt laughs. Though Will Ferrell’s delightfully odd Deangelo Vickers will remain on the show for at least a few additional episodes -- joined by upcoming guest appearances by original The Office creator/star Ricky Gervais (hopefully reprising his David Brent character again), Jim Carrey, Will Arnett, James Spader (!), and Ray Romano -- an official replacement for Carell/Scott has yet to be named.

That’s what she said at the official website.

Take Care, Take Care, Take Care by Explosions in the Sky Read Reviews
New album in stores Tuesday

The Austin, Texas-based instrumental rock band Explosions in the Sky are releasing their sixth full-length album this week. Take Care, Take Care, Take Care, released Tuesday, consists of six tracks of guitar-laden soundscapes that will quench the thirst of fans who had to endure a four-year break between this and their last album, All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone. Perhaps best known for their energetically melancholy tunes, the band is fittingly kicking off a series of tour dates around the world at a cemetery in Hollywood.

The Voice
Series premiere Tuesday at 9pm on NBC

NBC thinks that you haven’t had enough music talent shows. If American Idol and Glee aren’t enough for you, The Voice, premiering on Tuesday, might be what you’re looking for. But “looking” is precisely what the judges (who include Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton, and Adam Levine) won’t be doing; their backs will be turned so that they can’t see the talent perform, and will judge contestants solely on their voices. Host Carson Daly’s late night show Last Call has impressed us lately with its straightforward music coverage, so it’s a little odd to see him involved in this show’s cheesy game show premise.

This Is a Book by Demetri Martin
New book in stores Monday

The comedy books just keep on rolling. After Patton Oswalt’s Zombie Spaceship Wasteland and Tina Fey’s Bossypants comes Demetri Martin’s This Is a Book. Released Monday, This Is a Book is a humorous collection of essays, charts, and drawings that will appeal to fans of the now-defunct Important Things with Demetri Martin and anyone else who digs on Martin’s intelligently deadpan style. You can also see Martin in person as his Big Book Tour kicks off Monday in NYC.

Chart a course to Demetri Martin’s official website or publisher’s website.

13 Assassins Read Reviews
In limited release beginning Friday

Insanely talented and prolific Japanese director Takashi Miike, best known for the brilliant Audition and the demented Ichi the Killer, returns to American screens with one of his largest efforts to date. Opening Friday in limited release (and already screening On Demand), 13 Assassins is a remake of the 1963 Eiichi Kudo movie of the same name. In feudal Japan, political strife leads a group of samurai to try to take down the evil Lord Naritugu. Basically, 13 samurai assassins kick a whole lot of ass on a grand scale -- most notably in the 45-minute-long action sequence that closes the film..

Fast Five Read Reviews
In theaters Friday

The most confusingly titled franchise in movie history is back! Fast Five follows The Fast and the Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and Fast & Furious and stars actors from each film, most notably Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, and Ludacris. But this time, a bulky federal DSS agent played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is out to stop the fast-driving shenanigans. Tokyo Drift and Fast & Furious director Justin Lin returns to helm what has become one of the most successful action franchises out there.

Don’t let them get into cars at the official website.

The new explosions in the sky album is really disappointing, it feels like they have run out of ideas, which is too bad, b/c they are one of my fav bands. Good to see foo fighters getting a #1 album.
