Lists, lists and more lists ... and our platform of the year

2009 Game Platform Power Rankings
1Playstation 3
2 PC
3 Xbox 360
4 PSP
5 Nintendo DS
6 Wii

Sony's Playstation 3 console has edged out Microsoft's once-dominant Xbox 360 to finish on top in Metacritic's first annual Game Platform Power Rankings.

The Power Rankings combine a variety of factors -- all involving the quality and quantity of titles released during the year -- to rank the six major gaming platforms. Although Xbox 360 finished with the highest number of positively-reviewed titles (88 games receiving a Metascore of 75 or higher), and though Nintendo's Wii had the largest total number of releases (a whopping 362, or almost one per day), the PS3 console showed the best overall game quality for the year. Among other factors, five of the 10 highest-scoring games in 2009 (for any platform) were PS3 titles, including the year's top game: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Note that sales figures are not included in the platform or game rankings; if they were, the Wii, which is expected to sell almost twice as many titles as PS3 this year, would have a distinct advantage. Instead, the popular Wii platform had a poor year in terms of game quality, with critics liking just 28% of games released for the platform. We'll report more on the connection between reviews and sales (or, in this case, the lack of such a connection) in January, after final 2009 sales data is released.

Overall, we did not see quite as many blockbuster releases in 2009 as we expected, even though we are now deep into the lifecycles of the current generation of consoles and handhelds. Many of those expected "AAA" titles scheduled for release during the pre-holiday period (October through Thanksgiving weekend) were pushed into the traditionally calm waters of early 2010, avoiding some of this fall's giants (Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3 ODST) and thus delaying some of the most significant battles in the platform wars.

Below, we list the best-reviewed games for each gaming platform. First, however, let's take a look at how each platform fared during the past year.

Platform Breakdown, 2009
Platform # Titles # Great Median Metascore % Good
% Mixed % Bad
1 Playstation 3 228 10 72.0 43% 50% 7% 43,50,7
2 PC Games 306 7 72.5 43% 49% 9% 43,49,9
3 Xbox 360 279 7 70.0 35% 55% 11% 35,55,11
4 PSP 125 1 69.0 36% 57% 7% 36,57,7
5 Nintendo DS 329 3 69.0 27% 62% 10% 27,62,10
6 Wii 362 1 67.0 28% 59% 13% 28,59,13

The table reflects scores for all games in Metacritic's database released between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009. All Metascore data is from December 7, 2009. The # Great indicates the number of games released during the year with a Metascore of 90 or higher. The % Good reflects the percentage of games receiving a Metascore of 75 or higher (indicating positive reviews). % Mixed shows the percentage receiving a Metascore of 50-74 (indicating mixed or middling reviews), while % Bad includes games receiving a Metascore below 50 (indicating negative reviews). Percentages may not add up to 100% due to rounding. Games with fewer than 4 reviews are not scored and are not included in the percentage or median calculations above.

Sony clearly had a strong year in terms of game quality, with titles for both of its platforms (Playstation 3 and PSP) receiving better reviews on the whole than games for similar platforms. The two Sony platforms also had a fewer percentage of bad releases than any other platforms, so although PS3 and PSP gamers might not have had as many titles to choose from, they were less likely to buy a terrible game. In fact, PS3 owners could choose from some of the top-rated games of the year:

Best-Reviewed Games (Any Platform), 2009
  Platform Title Genre Metascore Users
1 PS3 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Action, Adventure 96 9.5
2 PS3 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 First-Person Shooter 94 5.4
Users vented their anger about developer Infinity Ward's decision not to permit dedicated servers for this title by hammering the game on Metacritic.
3 PS3 Street Fighter IV Fighting 94 8.0
4 Xbox 360 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 First-Person Shooter 94 6.0
5 Nintendo DS Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Action, Adventure 93 9.0
6 PS3 Braid Puzzle, Platform 93 9.4
7 Xbox 360 Street Fighter IV Fighting 93 7.4
8 PS3 God of War Collection Action, Adventure 92 9.5
9 Xbox 360 Batman: Arkham Asylum Action, Adventure 92 8.4
10 Xbox 360 Forza Motorsport 3 Racing, Driving 92 8.1

Games must have at least 5 reviews to qualify for the above list. The Metascore is a weighted average of scores from top professional critics, on a scale from 0 (bad) to 100 (good). User scores represent an average of scores assigned by Metacritic.com site visitors.

I never understood this sort of fan behavior. People have such ridiculous attitude about their consoles. Ultimately, you're buying a computer that runs gaming software. Undeniably, there are good reasons to own both. Good enough to be worth the price of admission. Presumably people who care which one wins only own one or the other, but it's not as though declaring the PS3 the winner makes it any less a reality that you won't be able to play Halo, L4D, or Mass Effect. And if we were to declare the Xbox 360 the winner in 2010, it wouldn't change the fact that you'll need a PS3 to play Heavy Rain or God of War 3.

Furthermore, what does it matter what someone else thinks? If you love ODST and L4D2, then the 360 was the better console for you. If you love Uncharted 2 and Infamous, the PS3 was better. Why either camp feels the need to convince other people that their personal tastes are superior is beyond me.

Ultimately, declaring a winner doesn't only seem arbitrary to me. It seems pointless. The only people who should care are Sony and Microsoft (and Nintendo), and they really only care about their bottom line. Everything else is secondary.

Well outside the PS3 winning, which it clearly did, I'd say this is a pretty lousy review of the 2009 year in video games. The PS3 obviously won, then 2nd should come Nintendo DS. The only thing holding it down at the 2nd lowest position, which is CRAP by the way, is the fact that making crappy shovelware for it is as easy as 1, 2, 3. With enough resources I could make one myself. Also it has wide appeal, and obviously is gonna have some little kid games made for it, which will not be reviewed well. However regardless of masses of crap, there's still tons of fantastic games, far more than the PSP had. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Henry Hatsworth's Puzzling Adventure, Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (the superior version, with innovative controls instead of just being a lame rehash....), Scribblenauts, and Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box. And those are just the well-reviewed games that appeal to me. Name a single PSP exclusive that was as good as ANY of those. That's right, none. Maybe the Monster Hunter game comes close but it's still not as good. The PSP just has a ton of mediocre games scoring around 75. WHO CARES? Would you really not take 7 great games over 20 mediocre ones? Let's face it if a game scores around a 75, it's safe to say it's a mediocre game. So by that standard the Wii just beat out every other platform every year. Right? Oh wait no MC has to pander to the fanboys.... This year the PSP had one AAA game, not even AAAE, and 15 AA, some of them not even AAE. Four games in it's top 20 weren't even scoring above 80 on average. The DS had one AAAE, one AAA, and 20 AA games. No games in it's top 20 averaged below an 80. Soooo how's it behind the PSP? Obviously because it's what people want to hear, people want to be reaffirmed that a system that is basically crap (and this is coming from a PS3 lover) is better than a great innovative system like the DS.

Then to say the 360 was 3rd best. It was by far the worst this year. Metacritic forgets the fact that games come on multiple platforms, and multiplats should not count for as much as as exclusives. The 360 has practically no good exclusives in 2009. The Wii on the other hand had 18 AAE games. That's a pretty good showing. Looking at the 360's top 40 list I see.... about 3 exclusives. Then 2 DLC games. DLC doesn't count...... why should it? It's not a full game. A great flash game could be released but it being fantastic isn't as significant as a great console game is it? That's not a good sign. The rankings should go thus:

    1. PS3
    2. DS
    3. PC
    4. Wii
    5. 360

I love the Wii so putting it all the way at #4 seems overly harsh, but the 3 systems above it had fantastic years. The 360 simply had no business even being considered to have had a good year.

I think that the article is inspiring, but my point isn't about that. People seem to avoid the obvious when it comes to the PS3, that is, whilst it isn't as customisable as a PC, it is a lot more customisable than an xbox360. And that sells it for me. Think about it.
    Fantastic job metacritic.

  • Durkee

Why is the PS3 version of Modern Warfare 2 ranked above the 360 version? The metascores are the same and the user score is better on the 360 version.

And I find the difference in the number of reviews pretty much helps out the PS3. Braid for 360 has 57 critic reviews. Braid for PS3 has 12 critic reviews.

  • Cole

The difference in identical games that scored differently for 360 and ps3 is likely due to noticeable differences in the AMOUNT of reviews used to average. 360 almost always has at least 10 more reviews factored in than the ps3. SF4 notably is missing a 67 that the Onion rated for the 360 version where they apparently didn't rate the ps3 version at all. On top of that, two of the top 10 games by sony were braid, originally released for 360 in 2008 as an exclusive, and the god of war collection which had GoW 1 and 2, both ps2 games released years ago. That game also only had 31 scores used to compile its average. I don't care which console is better, I just hate seeing stats incorrectly or hastily compiled. If you're going to do the research then do it, don't just grab a bunch of scores without looking for explanations for the variance. But then again, that's the biggest problem with metacritic: when you weigh all scores equally regardless of source, bias and ineptitude become mitigating factors.

Eh, well I think you have to consider the numbers as well. The PS3 released significantly fewer games than the 360 and possibly the DS/Wii, so that factors in...dunno though, guess it was a good year for Sony...

  • Jogosdepc

Most xbox360 games are released for pc. I have a ps3 and a pc so i get to play most games on the market.

  • Laptop Repair LA

Thank you for all of the comments and hard work reviewing games. I wish that the games were broken down into simple and complicated. Games such as Peggle, while not being very complex, are great games and need to be categorized differently than say Call of Duty.

  • V800022

Regarding the consoles wars! Personally, I like the grudge between XBOX360 and PS3, we all win because of it! If you are a smart gamer, you probably keep all consoles in your home but buy only the BEST software available (regardless if that software is PS3 or XBOX360 exclusive!).

In gaming, PC is totally outdated! In fact, the old PC is dying slowly (it seems software theft it is not only illegal but also lethal!). WII has great potential but not this year it seems.

PS3 leads the 2009 charts because of better SOFTWARE! And that’s great, future stands like this! QUALITY GAMING SOFTWARE should prevail anytime!

    NOTES :

    1. I will never buy a game that has a Metacritic score of 94 and a User score of 54. I will rent it however.

    2. After many hours of playing both (50+hours), I can surely say Uncharted 2 is a great game but Demon’s Souls is better! The latter is the real game of the year 2009!

  • Sky Ninja

2010 for the PS3 is looking great. Exclusives galore. A well deserved title for the PS3, good job.
