2010-11 New Shows
Comedies 3
Dramas 6
Reality 1

ABC will introduce 10 new shows during the upcoming season (including three that will be held back for midseason), and say goodbye to some of its poor-performing new programs from the past year.

  • While the sci-fi series "V" has been renewed for a 13-episode second season, fellow freshman drama "FlashForward" has been canceled. Note that "V" will be held back for midseason, although it could return as soon as November.
  • Also canceled are the acclaimed but low-rated comedy "Better Off Ted," veteran sitcom "Scrubs," and the new comedy "Romantically Challenged," as well as dramas "The Deep End," "The Forgotten," and "Happy Town."
  • The network still has not decided on reality shows "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution" and "Shark Tank"; neither is currently scheduled, but ABC could pick them up for midseason.
  • It was iffy for a while, but "Brothers & Sisters" will return, although for a slightly abbreviated (18-episode) season.
  • ABC's drama-heavy collection of new shows for next season includes two new medical dramas, a Detroit-set police drama, and a new courtroom procedural, in addition to a less-conventional show about a family of superheroes.
  • In addition to its new programs, the network has taken the reality program "Secret Millionaire" away from Fox.

Below, we take a closer look at ABC's projected schedules, followed by descriptions of the network's new programs.

ABC's primetime schedule

In addition to the shows listed below, the following new shows do not yet have a firm timeslot but have been picked up for the 2010-11 season and will appear as midseason replacements: "Happy Endings," "Mr. Sunshine," and "Off the Map." The latter program will likely follow "Desperate Housewives" on Sundays at 10pm when it debuts in the winter. The returning show "V" will also appear at some point between November and April (possibly on Tuesday nights at 9pm after "Dancing with the Stars" concludes this fall), and reality staples "The Bachelor" and "Supernanny" will return next winter.

New programs are in bold in the schedules below. All times are ET/PT unless otherwise indicated.

ABC's new programs

ImageBetter Together

First-year series on ABC's schedule for the 2010-11 season include:

Better Together (formerly known as That Couple)
This romantic comedy centers on two couples in two very different relationships. While Ben and Maddie have been dating for nine years and still can't quite commit to marriage, Mia and Casey are engaged and about to have a baby despite knowing each other for only two months.

ImageBody of Proof

Body of Proof
When a car accident ends her promising career as a neurosurgeon, Dr. Megan Hunt (Dana Delany) uses her medical skills to solve murders as Philadelphia's "most notorious" medical examiner, whose professional prowess is balanced by a troubled personal life. John Carroll Lynch, Nicholas Bishop, and Jeri Ryan co-star in this procedural that sounds on paper like a cross between House and Quincy.

ImageDetroit 1-8-7

Detroit 1-8-7
This documentary-style drama (meaning that the actors speak to the camera) provides an up close and personal view of a group of homicide detectives in inner-city Detroit, who are being tailed by a film crew. Michael Imperioli ("The Sopranos") stars.

ImageHappy Endings

Happy Endings
A close-knit group of friends is suddenly divided when the core of the group -- long-time couple Dave and Alex (Zachary Knighton and Elisha Cuthbert) -- split up after finally agreeing to get married. This comedy is the first show for creator David Caspe; Jamie Tarses ("My Boys") executive produces.

ImageMr. Sunshine

Mr. Sunshine
"Friends" star Matthew Perry returns to television as the manager of a second-tier sports arena in this sitcom from executive producers Jamie Tarses ("My Boys") and Thomas Schlamme ("The West Wing"). Allison Janney stars as Perry's crazed boss, while Andrea Anders ("Better Off Ted") plays his co-worker and would-be love interest.

My Generation (formerly Generation Y)
This hourlong dramedy depicts members of an Austin, Texas high school graduating class from 2000 who return home for their 10-year reunion after a decade of growing up that didn't go quite as they predicted. Creator/executive producer Noah Hawley had the same position on ABC's short-lived "The Unusuals."

ImageNo Ordinary Family

No Ordinary Family
Michael Chiklis ("The Shield") and Julie Benz ("Dexter") star as the married parents of two kids who -- as a group -- develop superpowers after surviving a plane crash during a family vacation. This new dramedy comes from Greg Berlanti and Jon Harmon Feldman of "Dirty Sexy Money," and the cast also features Tate Donovan ("Damages") and Romany Malco ("Weeds").

ImageOff the Map

Off the Map
One of two new ABC procedurals about a former surgeon, this new drama from Jenna Bans, Shonda Rhimes, and Betsy Beers ("Grey's Anatomy") follows Dr. Lily Brenner and her fellow doctors at an under-supplied medical clinic in a South American jungle, where she and her colleagues have relocated after giving up their practices in the States.

ImageThe Whole Truth

The Whole Truth
This courtroom drama from executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer and writer Tom Donaghy ("Without A Trace") will aim to show both sides of a criminal case each week, with audiences unsure of the outcome until the verdict is read at the conclusion of each episode. Joely Richardson stars as a district attorney whose professional battles each week with defense attorney Rob Morrow don't get in the way of their long-standing friendship.

I am so glad "The Middle" is back! My wife and I love that show!

  • Jordan

Wow! They cancel Better Off Ted and replace it with shows that will almost certainly turnout to be crap. ABC SUCKS ASS!!!

  • Christopher

I hate that Modern Family is on ABC, because I would have no other reason to watch this sorry excuse of a network. They make NBC look competent. No, wait, I take that back. Nobody is worse than NBC.

  • Collin

    To Christopher:

Umm, heard of the CW? I think NBC can always bank on them to suck worse.

  • m

I hope each and every one of these shows bomb for them canceling Better Off Ted, and for canceling Scrubs Med School (yes, that was last season's actual name, but ABC wasn't smart enough to advertise it as such, so instead of a spinoff they treated it as a whole new season)

  • Kelly

Flashforward is a smart, interesting, completely novel show with a fast pace that requires you to pay attention. So naturally, it's been canceled. Meanwhile, V, the worst show I've ever seen in my life, has been renewed. So pathetic that Americans are so dumb and so easily entertained.

  • Steve

I watch both FlashForward and V. What's truly pathetic is someone taking television so seriously. Go outside.

  • Cody

"Better Together" can't possibly go anywhere. The plot will get old quick and it wont be funny to watch. Sorry ABC.

  • Mark

Flashforward was fresh and interesting. It had a PLOT and you couldn't predict what was going to happen next. ABC must have a group of incompetent idiots in charge.
