Fifth network The CW became the final broadcaster to announce its 2011-12 plans on Thursday morning. Some highlights:

  • Bubble shows Hellcats, Nikita, and One Tree Hill learned their fates earlier this week: the latter two shows are returning, but Hellcats has been canceled. In addition, Life Unexpected was canceled earlier in the year, and Smallville has concluded its lengthy run.
  • Patti Carr and Lara Olsen (Life Unexpected) will be taking over showrunning duties on 90210 when it returns for a fourth season. The show will also shift to Tuesday nights in the fall.
  • Nikita, meanwhile, moves to Fridays, and One Tree Hill will be held back until midyear, when it will return for a final season.
  • The CW's new scripted shows next season will include the Sarah Michelle Gellar thriller Ringer, a witch drama (The Secret Circle) from the creator of Vampire Diaries, and medical drama Hart of Dixie. The network will also introduced three new reality programs.
  • Once again, the network will go an entire season without airing a single comedy show.

Below, we take a closer look at The CW's projected schedule, followed by descriptions for each of the network's new programs.

The CW's new programs

First-year series on The CW's schedule during the 2011-12 season include:

The Frame
Sort of like a high-tech, team-oriented Big Brother, reality competition The Frame asks ten, two-person teams to each live in their own stripped-down, single-room house for eight weeks, completely isolated from the outside world -- and from other teams, save for interactions via video monitors. A variety of challenges, eliminations, and "punishments" awaits each team, some determined by viewer suggestions. The show will arrive at midseason, when it will air twice a week.

A New York City doctor moves to a small Southern town filled with quirky inhabitants after inheriting a medical practice there in this dramedy created by Leila Gerstein (a producer on Gossip Girl and Eli Stone). Rachel Bilson (The O.C.) heads the cast as the fish-out-of-water physician, and the show also features Jaime King (My Generation) and Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights). Nancy Travis co-starred in the pilot, but she's also in ABC's new Tim Allen comedy, so her role here could be recast or reduced.

H8R
Everyday people get a chance to confront the C-list celebrities they despise the most -- on national TV! -- in this new reality show hosted by Mario Lopez (Extra). Wondering what type of "celebrities" would appear on such a show to defend themselves? The pilot features Kim Kardashian and Snooki. It's an hour long, but it'll probably feel longer.

Re-Modeled
This midseason reality show follows a group of hundreds of small-town modeling agencies who unite under the guidance of a fashion industry veteran to see if they can compete against the industry's major players.

Originally slated to appear on CBS, this action-drama is instead headed to The CW, where it seems a better fit. Sarah Michelle Gellar stars as a troubled woman on the run from the mob who decides to hide out by adopting the identity of her wealthy identical twin sister (also played by Gellar), only to discover that her sister also has a bounty on her head. Nestor Carbonell (Lost), Kristoffer Polaha (Life Unexpected), and Ioan Gruffudd (Titanic, Fantastic Four) also star.

Forget vampires, werewolves, and zombies. The next big trend in Hollywood's still-growing supernatural fad? Witches. Not only do they pop up in the upcoming season of True Blood, but next season they get their own show on The CW. Based on the young adult book trilogy of the same name by Vampire Diaries author L.J. Smith, The Secret Circle is adapted for the network -- like Diaries before it -- by Kevin Williamson (Dawson's Creek). The series centers on a teen girl (Life Unexpected's Britt Robertson) who moves from California to Salem, Massachusetts, where she discovers that she comes from a long line of witches, and, as a witch herself, holds the key to a brewing battle between good and evil. Thomas Dekker (The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Kaboom) and Gale Harold (Queer as Folk) also star.

Hellcats gone??? Noooo! That was an awesome show! ... Why the hell did they cancel it??? Secret circle is *maybe* the only new show that looks ok in this new season... the only other returning shows I watch on this channel are 90210 and gossip girl... this is going to be a depressing year for shows on this network!
