RATING: PG-13 for mature thematic elements involving substance abuse, language and some sensuality

Starring Sandra Bullock, Viggo Mortensen, Dominic West, Diane Ladd, Elizabeth Perkins, and Steve Buscemi

For Gwen Cummings (Bullock), a successful New York writer living life in the fast lane, life is just an exercise in debauchery. That is, until Gwen's ungraceful display at her sister Lily's (Perkins) wedding, when she gets drunk, commandeers the limo and earns herself a DUI and 28 days in court-ordered rehab. (Columbia Tristar)

Rolling Stone Peter Travers

Count this rehab a success.

75

New York Daily News Jami Bernard

Not without missteps and the occasional mouthful of sugar, but it grows on you.

Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

Bullock brings a kind of ground-level vulnerability to 28 Days that doesn't make her into a victim but simply into one more suitable case for treatment.

75

Entertainment Weekly Owen Gleiberman

Bullock gives it her all; she's bristling and alive on screen in a way that she hasn't been since ''Speed.''

New York Post Jonathan Foreman

Much less mawkish and predictable than you might expect.

70

TV Guide Maitland McDonagh

Funny, thought-provoking and, yes, touching.

A reliably solid treat.

Charlotte Observer Lawrence Toppman

If only Hollywood studios weren't so addicted to happy, oversimplified endings, the film might leave us shaken instead of slightly stirred.

USA Today Andy Seiler

Far too familiar.

60

Dallas Observer Luke Y. Thompson

As ridiculous as it all is...it's somehow eminently watchable.

A reminder of why Bullock became a movie star in the first place.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer William Arnold

(Bullock's) performance, and the movie's serious side, soon get lost in an overly slick script.

Chicago Reader Lisa Alspector

Shows her transition to sobriety as many ensemble stories do--mainly through the development of other characters, the quirkier the better.

San Francisco Chronicle Peter Stack

Mostly it seems forced, pat and didactic.

The New York Times Stephen Holden

Begins with such a flurry of promise that it comes as a sharp disappointment when this drug-rehab comedy skids out of control.

LA Weekly Judith Lewis

Has all the force of bubbles on air -- fun to look at, but exciting no emotion deeper than fleeting delight.

40

Newsweek David Ansen

This is a movie afraid of its own shadows.

38

Baltimore Sun Ann Hornaday

Bullock's character goes through some changes, but she never turns into some unrecognizably serious actress.

38

Chicago Tribune Marc Caro

A cutesy, heavy-handed morality tale that contains nary a believable moment.

30

Village Voice Dennis Lim

Thomas's fleet-footed approach suggests the anxious embarrassment of a director in an awful hurry to get it over with.

25

Portland Oregonian Shawn Levy

So shapeless, pointless and witless a film that it can be explained only by surmising that the people who made it were bombed at the time.

20

Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Too glib too often to make much of an impression any way you look at it.

20

TNT RoughCut J. Rentilly

The saddest part about 28 Days is it's more fun when it's drunk.

10

Salon.com Charles Taylor

Not even court-ordered rehab could save this stumbling drunk of a picture.

Lover Girl gave it a10:
Sandra Bullock played her part absolutly fantastic! One of her best movies ever.

Pat C. gave it a 7:
Bullock goes to rehab, and in the process proves she's not just another pretty face, with trim figure, flashing dark eyes, jet-black velvety hair, pouting breasts, firm tush, long-boned thighs and the feet to tip-toe out of your sorry little pad and back to being the perfect neighbor-girl next door. (I point out the above because, well, because I can). She's got a brain, too. In this case a brain not preoccupied with monitoring alcohol intake, causing her to miss the turnoff to your neighborhood and head on down to the drunk tank. Seriously, Bullock's acting talents are diverse and in some ways greater than the pigeonhole roles from which she has managed to derive substantial income. I wouldn't call this film her performance for the ages or anything like that. She'd obviously be fun to get drunk with, but that's not the point of the show. I do say Prepare to be impressed, and to anticipate positive useful information.

Tara D. gave it a 10:
I love this movie... it's like me in the future... except I got a warning and can now stop it.

Conrad R. gave it a 7:
I always thought 'boring' movies were no good, but although it's slow, and yes - it is boring - its also got a secretive charm that I cannot explain.

Cole L. gave it a 6:
A strange story with a jumpy plot. You will not waste time, but it is just barely worth it.
