You're going to hear a lot about 500 Days of Summer over the next few months. All of the good stuff is true. Any bad stuff you hear is not.

It's a feat of star acting, and it helps make (500) Days not just bitter or sweet but everything in between.

Here is a rare movie that begins by telling us how it will end and is about how the hero has no idea why.

Much like Annie Hall did for a previous generation, (500) Days of Summer may be the movie that best captures a contemporary romantic sensibility.

This is a romantic comedy that makes the concept of romantic comedies appealing again -- that reminds you how resonant and transporting they can be when they're done right.

You know how people say that they don't make romantic comedies like they used to? Turns out they do. At least, director Marc Webb does -- and has -- with his clever and sweet debut, 500 Days of Summer.

The casting is perfect. Webb has chosen leads who are familiar but not overexposed, and who are on equal footing (neither overshadows the other).

Portland Oregonian Shawn Levy

The film does a lovely job of balancing emotional clarity, formal trickery, pop sweetness, and heartfelt narrative. It is, yes, cute, and it is, yes, quirky. And it is entirely justified, estimable and loveable in being those things.

The film is, finally, a brilliant tap dance over a void: There’s no real drama when the inner life of the female lead is so shrouded, even if that’s the point.

Ultimately, the best thing about (500) Days of Summer isn't its gimmicky script. It's the constant performance of Gordon-Levitt, who shifts, scene-by-scene, from moments of ebullience to abject dejection.

Xavier E gave it a10:
A perfect movie with large impact.

Ken G gave it a7:
***Spoiler alert*** I notice some critics and fans have called this an original romantic comedy, which I don't really get. Other then the fact that the couple ultimately break-up, I found this to be a rather conventional romantic-comedy. And I don't know if merely having the couple end up apart, qualifies a movies as original. But I thought it was a conventional romantic-comedy that was done with heart, is well acted, and has a bittersweet feel.

Connor B. gave it a10:
The best romantic comedy I've seen in years and an excellent directorial debut from Marc Webb. Deschanel is one of my favourite actresses and she really shines in this heart-warming film. The soundtrack was also stunning, and some of the more innovatively filmed scenes really impressed me. Ten out of ten.

James gave it a0:
Hipster garbage, unrealistic, flat pointless, lifeless plot. Much worse than Annie Hall and other failed "romantic comedies". I wish I spent my money on something else. If you have seen District 9 I recommend seeing that instead of this trite sh*te.

Bruce X gave it a9:
Very realistic, honest portrayal of young adult love relationships that never quite work out--as is often the case in real life. This movie grows on you; good to see with friends and discuss afterwards. Script is superb; you never quite know where it's going, thus keeping up the "suspense."

Tom M gave it a10:
Fresh, inventive, superbly written, and engagingly acted. Destined to be a classic. A smart movie that's a joy to watch. My wife and I keep commenting on one memorable touch after another.

Al J gave it a9:
Fun, witty, true. This movie is everything you don't expect to find from a romantic comedy - and for that reason, I loved it!
