90

Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

A crisp, elegantly resonant film.

New York Magazine Peter Rainer

The real passion here is the almost erotic thrill that acting still holds for Moreau.

The New Republic Stanley Kauffmann

Moreau's face is the base and the beauty of the film.

75

Chicago Tribune Michael Wilmington

The film, like its lovers, is fond, giddy and poetic about love and death.

Chicago Reader Jonathan Rosenbaum

There's something self-defeating about approaching an unconventional artist so conventionally, and the story becomes touching only insofar as it overrides much of what made Duras special.

Village Voice Michael Atkinson

May worship heedlessly at Duras's memory, but it's a testament to Moreau alone.

New York Daily News Elizabeth Weitzman

Dayan's weakly structured biopic Cet Amour-là is, to be kind, less than inspired. But as a showcase for legendary French actress Jeanne Moreau, it's a tour de force.

New York Post V.A. Musetto

The screenplay also fails to put the unconventional relationship into context. It never lets on that Andrea helped Duras produce some of her best work, including the autobiographical "The Lovers."

The Onion (A.V. Club) Noel Murray

Moreau is magnetic as the wise-but-neurotic scribe, though the same can't be said of Demarigny, whose timid portrayal of a reverent fanboy sucks the energy out of most of his scenes. Dayan's direction is even more problematic.

Entertainment Weekly Lisa Schwarzbaum

You can forget about veracity, since this gauzy and sometimes dopey romanticization can't be trusted.

TV Guide Ken Fox

Pretentious but gorgeously photographed.

Washington Post Desson Thomson

There is one reason, and one reason alone, to watch Cet Amour-La. It is Jeanne Moreau.

The New York Times Dave Kehr

Ms. Moreau, still an imperious presence at age 75, makes no effort to look or sound like Duras -- this is one sacred monster stepping in for another.

San Francisco Chronicle C.W. Nevius

It is a great story, but it hasn't been translated to the screen. It is never a good sign when the biographical notes have more emotional wallop than the movie.

The New Yorker David Denby

The movie that Josée Dayan has made about the Duras-Andréa affair is not a scandal. Unfortunately, it’s not much of anything but a solemn joke. [14 April 2003, p.88]

40

Variety Deborah Young

A limp-to-wilted film version of Duras' 16-year-long love affair with a young man who became her secretary and literary executor.

LA Weekly Ella Taylor

Sympathetic, if lackluster.
