For a big-screen disposable, Doom has a few jolts, a few good laughs and an attractive female lead to whom you want to say, "What's a nice girl like you doing on a Mars like this?"

It's really not all that bad. Ultra-derivative bigscreen transplant of one of the most successful (and controversial) games ever made plays like a mutant cross between a biotech thriller and a zombie movie, with all the alien autopsies, blood-gushing protuberances and meaningless scientific jargon that come with the territory.

Entertainment Weekly Marc Bernardin
By hewing close to James Cameron's "Aliens" playbook, Doom manages to escape the game-to-movie curse that afflicted "Resident Evil," "House of the Dead," and, well, every other movie based on a game.

Doom may be by the numbers, with a roll call of colorful types systematically exterminated while The Rock entertains with cartoonish expressions and reactions (the closest the film comes to personality).

The Hollywood Reporter Richard James Havis
Plot, character development and dialogue are so sparse that the screenwriters are fortunate they're not paid by the word. But this basic approach doesn't render it ineffectual. There's so little to go wrong that those who like their entertainment mindless and violent will find little fault.

Doom, the film, aspires to be more than just a gory shoot em' up--though it'd still be a stretch to call it a thinking man's action movie.

The Rock's ungainly performance is somewhat alleviated by Karl Urban as a crew member and Rosamund Pike as his twin sister.

If he (The Rock) can keep those wandering eyebrows in check, his future as an action hero appears unlimited--that is, provided he can resist taking roles in movies like this one.

The movie ultimately cops out by culminating in a fistfight between two humans, with nary a cyborg missile-throwing devil in sight.

As dumb as they come, the entertaining Doom might warrant a place in cinema history as the first movie in which someone rips off their own ear.

Beyond a couple of cool guns and one long, gory, clever first-person shot, Doom is something the video games have never been: dull.

Not quite as dreadful as Resident Evil: Apocalypse, but that's hardly a major achievement.

Doesn’t break any new ground – it actually steals from half a dozen other sci-fi movies – but it’ll make enough at the box office to justify further game flicks.

Like Doom itself, the movie is rich in backstory, but sparse in actual story.

Basically a deadly dull rehash of "Resident Evil," which in turn was a third-generation clone of "Aliens."

We don't need a discussion of plot in a review of a movie made from a video game, do we? Nor do we care whether the characters are complicated (no), the acting is sophisticated (no), the direction is competent (no) or the camerawork is clever (no).

Baffling too is The Rock's choice to follow up his acclaimed performance in "Be Cool" with a role that requires him to do little more than widen his eyes and grunt lines.

Doom is, to its detriment, a remarkably faithful re-creation of the massively popular video game. In other words, it's a dark, violent, nerve-wracking, trigger-giddy waste of time.

Mark D gave it a6:
As a big fan of both The Rock and the Doom games you could say i was excited about this film. You can also imagine my bemusement to discover that this has little to do with the games and that The Rock is wasted on a character that requires him to do little more then scowl and shout a bit. Taken purly as a sci fi horror film though this is, um, ok. A passable guilty pleasure (as one other person said) that does get better after a slow first half hour and the first person scene is a minor classic.

Alex R. gave it an8:
Aside from an awful first person scene that drags on for FAR too long, this film is a pretty taught, nicely paced monster film. Much better than 'Resident Evil' and most other zombie films, for that matter. No... Not as good as Aliens.

Liudas gave it a0:
If I lay my hands on that guy who made this so called movie I'll probably kill him. I am a fanatic DOOM games series fan since my childhood and when i go and see this movie i just want to beat that guy how is responsible for this abomination. First of all what original Doom has to do with this Gods forsaken peace of. Second, even if you compare Doom with anything like this crap, you should go straight to mentally ill persons hospital or something. It's not even worth zero - I should give it minus hundred. In short, I AM MAD and I want to kick that bastard's ass for even messing with DOOM's name!

B J. gave it a2:
Awful. All it needed to be was a plotless movie with cool guns and a lot of action. It had everything it shouldn't have had and lacked everything it needed. Boring, pointless, terrible.

Alec R. gave it a9:
Ok, I actually sat down and enjoyed this movie, instead of finding everything I could to sya this movie sucked. Which it didn't. I had known for a long time it wasn't going to follow the games storyline. While the game is really good, my question for the game is, What Storyline? I go to the movies not to be absorbed or to see a love movie, but to get away from life every once and awhile. This movie was really good for a middle budget film. Sit down and enjoy a film people, don't find everything you can to say a film is bad.

Apocalypse Brown gave it a3:
Abysmal! Every actor in this film should never work anywhere again. And whats makes it worse it has NOTHING to do with the game!? At least..... no Red Eye is still worse!

Fred Bob gave it a2:
The movie is poorly done and I am disappointed that the Rock was in this movie. It was nothing like the games and the acting was bad, really bad. If you give this movie above a 6, you saw something I didn't.
