New Times (L.A.) Luke Y. Thompson

It's all a bit silly and predictable, but maybe that's the point.

LA Weekly Paul Malcolm

Railsback and Snodgrass struggle against caricature in their own fine performances.

Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

At times awkward and under-inspired, creating a question as to whether so gloomy and repugnant a tale was worth telling simply for its own sake.

A disappointingly mild re-creation of true events.

Chris O. gave it a 7:
They avoided making it a slasher movie and that is a plus. Gein comes across as creepy and just short of a load. But many of us fall into such a category. He was haunted by his mother and this relationship was the cause of much of his problems.

Murat S. gave it an 8:
I want more scary movies please.

[Anonymous] gave it an 8:
It certainly caught my attention and I couldn't turn it off. I'd watch it again.

Diane B. gave it a 5:
I have spoken with a woman who was Ed Gein's next door neighbor at the time of his arrest. Based on my conversation with her and other research I have done, I feel the movie has several factual errors. It implies that several people were inside the house prior to his arrest - specifically Mary the tavern owner and the woman he was trying to sell the house to - yet they did not notice all the body parts hanging around the house or in jars in the kitchen. Based on what the police found upon entering the house, no one could have been inside and not have suspected what was going on. I felt it was only a mediocre representation of what really happened in Plainfield, WI.
