Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

A sweet, entertaining retread of an ancient formula, in which opposites attract despite all the forces arrayed to push them apart.

ReelViews James Berardinelli

If you want daring or original, Fools Rush In isn't the movie to see. Like 90% of all romantic comedies, it follows a time-honored formula that allows little room for variation.

San Francisco Examiner G. Allen Johnson

Perhaps a bit miscast, and with a penchant for too many double-takes, Perry nonetheless is game.

Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Reback's script has real substance and perception, with Alex and Isabel emerging as individuals of depth and dimension, and their story is told with humor, passion and wit.

USA Today Mike Clark

Hurried, harried. [14 February 1997, pg.D4]

The Globe and Mail (Toronto) Liam Lacey

Mediocre movie.

Variety Todd McCarthy

In a role that Tom Hanks might have played a decade or so ago, Perry is pretty bland and doesn't provide any hints as to why Alex is so emotionally stymied.

Chicago Reader Lisa Alspector

Though the climax of the story is a little forced and sloppy, with both lovers behaving way out of character, this movie is aware enough of the conventions it's using that it's more moving than cloying.

Entertainment Weekly Lisa Schwarzbaum

The result is a stilted culture clash and a lot of monochromatically conflicted facial expressions from Perry before he's thawed by the love of an ethnic woman.

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

The film never gets past the unlikelihood that its characters have much chance of living happily ever after. Or of finding real heat or humor along the way.

The Onion (A.V. Club) Keith Phipps

The best that can be said is that neither Matthew Perry nor Salma Hayek embarrass themselves, but they're both appealing enough that the same could probably be said if they were starring in a commercial for a hair-replacement system.

Washington Post Rita Kempley

Movies don't come much lamer than Fools Rush In.

TV Guide Staff (Not credited)

Salma Hayek steals the awkwardly formulaic, cliche-ridden show right out from under him (Perry).

25

Christian Science Monitor David Sterritt

Tennant's featherweight comedy is clearly pitched at the date-movie crowd, and couples may enjoy it if they can get past the picture's simplistic ethnic stereotypes and its willingness to wish away every real-life family problem the characters will surely face after the feel-good finale.

San Francisco Chronicle Mick LaSalle

A sour romantic comedy that arrives in theaters just in time to spoil Valentine's Day. Its plot is a catalog of unpleasantness. Its characters are repellent.

Dallas Observer Andy Klein

This really should have gone straight to video--or, better yet, to the nearest landfill.

Washington Post Desson Thomson

This isn't real life. It isn't even a movie. It's an extended sitcom. And for the first time in your life, you'll actually beg for commercials.

James H gave it a7:
I thoroughly enjoyed this film, obviously more than most people. Salma Hayek and Matthew Perry lift this well above the ordinary romantic comedy. Although the story is pretty routine, it does have the unique twist of the clashing cultures that spark a more interesting story. It's the stars that make it work.

Juana C. gave it a10:
