70

Variety David Rooney

Starts out on an exhilarating high but gradually loses steam, Janice Beard 45 WPM tries hard to overcome its inconsistency with relentless whimsy.

LA Weekly Paul Malcolm

Slight but charming comedy.

New Times (L.A.) Robert Wilonsky

Wacky chaos ensues, as the film veers toward a subplot about industrial espionage, but director Clare Kilner's debut is never as daft as it should have been.

The New York Times Stephen Holden

As Janice, Eileen Walsh, an engaging, wide-eyed actress whose teeth are a little too big for her mouth, infuses the movie with much of its slender, glinting charm.

Village Voice Ed Park

Playful and sentimental, with comic-book characterization and a half-orphaned, filially righteous head case, Janice Beard resembles a British "Amélie."

Christian Science Monitor David Sterritt

Lively acting and an amiable comic atmosphere offer partial compensation for generally lackluster filmmaking.

TV Guide Maitland McDonagh

The plot's contrivances are uncomfortably strained, and ultimately your reaction to its featherweight story of love and serendipity will be determined by how charming you find the dithering, slack-jawed Janice.

New York Daily News Jack Mathews

As the story of a romantic office lump, Janice Beard resembles last year's "Bridget Jones's Diary." But it is a far, far lesser thing.

Gilbert Mulroneycakes: A Suitable Case For Treatment gave it a 7:
Wow, Janice Beard 45 WPM. (I'm not going to draw attention to the fact that the US version's de-acronymed the title...except, oops) This was made in, ooh, 1643 or so. Well, okay, but it predates Bridget Jones by at least a year or so. Took its sweet time coming to America, then, and that's not a good sign...although it's not bad, but a bit "meh". Harmless enough, a good chick-flick to rent (but not from Blockbuster). Damned with faint praise? Not for me to say, guv.
