TV Guide Staff (Not Credited)

Called everything from a feminist statement to a gay camp-classic to an anti-McCarthyism allegory. While it certainly is all of these--and more--it's about time it was acclaimed for it what it really is: a genuine western film classic.

The New York Times A.O. Scott

A goofy and remarkable film.

Variety Staff (Not Credited)

Love, hate and violence, with little sympathy for the characters, is stirred up during the overlong film.

Lee C. gave it a10:
A one-of-a-kind, and way ahead of it's time western that holds up wonderfully today, and much better than most from it's time. It's surreal, beautiful, campy and wildly entertaining. See it !

Ellen B. gave it a 4:
A melodrama in western clothes. Crawford is too much as always.

Tom L. gave it a 10:
A masterpiece due to the incredible storke of genius on the part of Joan Crawford - the juxtapostioning of the male and female roles, making this a showdown between two woman as opposed to two men.

Dr Morb gave it a 9:
Cult Classic- nuff said but if you want to know something about this one, just imagine two great gunfighters- one of them who doesnt wear a gun, but plays the hell out of a guitar, Johnny Guitar, and the other, who is compelled to dance whenever he hears music, The Dancin' Kid.

Yoon Min C. gave it a 9:
A weird but effective combo of the Western and the Woman's Movie, it's Mildred Pierce with a six shooter. Joan Crawford and Sterling Hayden perform with remarkable sensitivity and indeed you'd be hardpressed to find another Western where the relationship between man and woman is explored with such intensity. The villainess is a tightly knotted fireball of sexual jealousy, and the final shootout between the two gals is one helluva a catfight, if you're into that sort of thing.
