New York Post V.A. Musetto

The tragic victims in "City of God" are played by actors while those in La Sierra are flesh-and-blood real.

Salon.com Andrew O'Hehir

The story of how La Sierra moves from a seemingly pointless war to an unexpected peace is a thrilling one, although the impact of seeing what becomes of these three kids is devastating.

Chicago Reader Hank Sartin

The intense focus on this trio makes for good portraiture, but it left me hungry for more about the social context that shaped them.

Village Voice Joshua Land

A stark, relentlessly deglamorized vision of ghetto life, La Sierra is essential viewing for anyone who ponied up for the aestheticized amorality of the Brazilian "City of God."

The New York Times Jeannette Catsoulis

Variety Robert Koehler

Result is a loose personal piece of reportage that places people over ideas and larger issues, and reveals the pic's severe limitations long before a surprisingly upbeat ending.

Cesar B gave it a9:
I must start by appreciating the great cpurage of the director for filming in one of the most dangerous places in the whole world. La sierra is a movie about kids that are involved in a war. Gladly most of us won't ever be involved in one, or at least if one does, like my father, it would only be temporary. HOwever there is people out there in the world who are born, grow and die in comeone else`s war; for these people have no chance and they will all have miserabla lifes. ENJOY THE MOVIE!!

johan m. gave it an8:
My rate is based on how true it is, and i have respect for the directors to have made that movie in the hood of my city.
