Starring Argentino Vargas
Through a clearing in the dense jungle, the dead bodies of two young people appear. Twenty years later, an old man named Vargas is released from prison. So opens Lisandro Alonso's elegantly austere investigation of the boundaries between the natural world and the human, and the violence that lurks within them both. (Anthology Film Archives)

Salon.com Andrew O'Hehir
It's a tremendous experience, whatever it is; the kind of thing supposed art-movie audiences used to tolerate and pretty much don't anymore.

Like a slowed-down, more realistic and psychologically penetrating cousin of a Werner Herzog or Terrence Malick film, Los Muertos is primarily concerned with the rhythms and textures of life.
Read Full Review >Village Voice Nathan Lee
Into the river, miraculous landscape: Los Muertos connects with the elemental energies of sunlight, water, and leaf like nothing since Blissfully Yours. Indeed, that might have worked well for a title here -- that, or Heart of Darkness.

A singular and essential figure of the Argentinean new wave; [Alonso] is not quite the minimalist some claim, but he can make the simple act of filming feel so monumental that storytelling seems secondary.

Director Lisandro Alonso is content to leave much to viewers' imagination. That he is able to do so and still hold our attention is a tribute to his talent as a filmmaker and an authentic performance by nonprofessional actor Argentino Vargas as the ex-con.
