Summary

RATING: Not Rated

Starring Barbara Sarafian, Jurgen Delnaet, and Johan Heldenbergh

Ordinary Matty has nothing but three kids to her name. She works at the post office, her husband has run off to the bedroom of one his students. At forty-three life is pretty hopeless. Then she gets in a fender-bender at the grocery story with twenty-nine year old Johnny. After some harsh words, Johnny finds himself enamored with Matty, who finds that she likes being wanted, and decides to take a chance on Johnny. A romance ensues just as the wandering husband comes home. Now Matty finds she is the center of attention. Matty must choose to settle back into the life she was leading or to break into something new and step into the unknown. This heart-felt movie is covered in subtle humor making the story like a well made meal. (NeoClassics Films)

90

The New York Times Stephen Holden

The movie's steady attention to detail lends it a texture rarely found in films about domestic life. Its eye and ear for the particular and for what is left unsaid in tense conversation is unerring.

Highly enjoyable romantic comedy.

Accomplished freshman outing by Flemish TV director Christophe van Rompaey features a knockout perf from actress Barbara Sarafian ("8½ Women").

ReelViews James Berardinelli

There are no big-name stars. Barbara Serafian, who is excellent, has a thin, eclectic resume. She looks a little like Frances McDormand.

New York Post V.A. Musetto

A pleasing alternative to the season's Oscar-baiting movies.

Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

An uncommon comedy that is fairly serious most of the time.

San Francisco Chronicle Justin Berton

Underscores that choices in love are rarely clean and easy, and more often than not, are poignantly funny.

Washington Post John Anderson

What's universally hilarious is the way the inhabitants of "Moscow" come so close to snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Austin Chronicle Josh Rosenblatt

Feels not only like a movie from another culture but from another world.

Christian Science Monitor Peter Rainer

At worst is inoffensive. But that's the point. When you're making a movie about people whose lives are torn up in this way, inoffensiveness is, well, offensive.

Boston Globe Wesley Morris

I wanted to keep watching. I wanted to leave. In between, I prayed for the piano-accordion soundtrack to silence itself for just one scene (it's like being trapped in a little French restaurant that refuses to close).

Village Voice Nicolas Rapold

We're not talking the Dardennes brothers here, but fellow Belgian Christophe Van Rompaey gives this light May-to-December pair-up an agreeably mussed, pedestrian milieu.

Chicago Reader J.R. Jones

This Belgian comedy suffers from the fact that its mismatched lovers are so consistently unpleasant; it catches fire only in the scenes between the mother and the daughter.
