Summary

RATING: PG-13 for some sensuality

Starring Richard Gere, Diane Lane, Scott Glenn, Christopher Meloni, Viola Davis, James Franco, Mae Whitman, and Pablo Schreiber

Adrienne, a woman still reeling from her husband's betrayal and struggling to rebuild a life without him, she welcomes the chance for escape when an old friend asks her to manage her inn in Rodanthe for a weekend. It's the off-season and the inn would be shuttered but for the unlikely arrival of its solitary guest, Paul, a doctor from the city. A man who long ago sacrificed his family to his career, Paul has come to Rodanthe to fulfill a difficult obligation and to face his own crisis of conscience. They are two strangers sharing the same roof. But as a major storm closes in, they turn to each other for comfort, and set in motion a life-changing romance that will resonate through the rest of their lives. (Warner Bros. Picture)

Charlotte Observer Lawrence Toppman

This is one of the increasingly rare Hollywood films that treat people in middle age as though their feelings were just as intense and their needs just as valid as those of people half their age.

Philadelphia Inquirer Carrie Rickey

Rodanthe is a reliably steamy stormy sultry story.

Empire Angie Errigo

It's like "The Bridges Of Madison County" with more shouting, only not nearly as good. No surprises whatsoever, but nice scenery, attractive stars and another credible, affecting performance from Lane that hoiks it up an extra star.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer William Arnold

A slow-moving, unashamedly weepy, middle-age love story of the kind big-studio Hollywood doesn't often make anymore.

The Hollywood Reporter Michael Rechtshaffen

A tasteful melodrama courtesy of the easy chemistry between its two leads and a generally restrained touch from Tony-winning director George C. Wolfe in his feature debut.

Hardly groundbreaking, but for those with an appetite for an increasingly rare gust of unapologetic romance, well, as they say, any port in a storm.

May not be best chick flick around, but it's the flick with the best chick by far.

It's tough to make it through Nights in Rodanthe without wincing at its sticky-sweet sentimentality.

Aims straight for the tear ducts as well, but this weepie is a dry well.

Although I haven't read Nights in Rodanthe, I have to assume there is material in the book that would have helped the movie make hearts thud instead of fingers tap.

The film tastefully yet unenergetically chugs along.

As skillful and charismatic as Gere is, I never get the sense he's really in there, conversing with his fellow actor.

What really sells this three-hanky tear-jerker -- and there were a lot of women buying it during a recent screening -- is Lane's steely and vulnerable performance. Like Tinker Bell, she almost made me believe in fairies. Almost.

Boston Globe Wesley Morris

Once a hurricane blows Gere and Lane into each other's arms, all the director's tasteful style and good sense turn into mush. Given the material, I suppose it has to.

It's an increasingly rare pleasure to see two naturally aging adults onscreen, and it's not exactly hard work to watch this still-gorgeous pair fall in love.

This isn't a movie: it's a feature-length Ralph Lauren commercial.

Lane and Gere mime adult courtship with the efficiency of synchronized swimmers. Yet in this ocean of emotion, they look like they're drowning.

Exhibits a certain amount of integrity in its dedication to being uncomplicated, unashamed romantic goo.

The movie around Lane and Gere is unreal, a tortured construct, but they open a breathing space in its center.

The movie attempts to jerk tears with one clunky device after another, in a plot that is a perfect storm of cliche and contrivance. In fact, it even contains a storm -- an imperfect one.

Another low brow weeper from the pen of Nicholas Sparks (who else?) Lovely Diane Lane and dashing Richard Gere do what they can to move along an absolutely embarrassing story, but what can they do when the best thing about a movie is the beach house?

Michelle S gave it a7:
I thought this movie was pretty entertaining for a love story. I thought the storyline itself was different and had the right amount of comedy, sappiness and drama. I was surprised by the ending. I guess not all love stories have that stereotypical happily ever after. I do feel that this still ended on a good note in that she learned a lot about herself and what she wanted out of life. And come on, how can you go wrong with Richard Gere and Diane Lane!

Amanda H. gave it a9:
I thought this movie was beautiful, It shows how real love can feel. When she received his letters she acted just how I do when I recive a letter from my fiance in bootcamp. I understood the characters and wept with them.

Jay H. gave it a4:
The good production and fine cast can't make up for the stifling slow pace of the film. It is slow to get started, and at best reached a state of barely not bored. The film never ignites.

Kristin gave it a10:
I loved this movie!! I am a huge Nicholas Sparks fan! I cried through just about all of the movie. If you actually have a heart, this movie is one to see!!

Marina D. gave it an8:
Ahhh... what a chick-flick! I loved it as a 2-box movie. (You'll need two boxes of tissues if you'll go & see it) As long as you know what you're going to see, I can recommend it. The house looked great!!!

Goffy gave it a0:
I think I am going to be sick. How awful.
