Seattle Post-Intelligencer Sean Axmaker
Looks simultaneously ahead of its time and delightfully quaint, a simple romantic comedy that revels in the dreamy artifice of a meticulously re-created fantasy Las Vegas.

When the movie is viewed with fresh eyes, the most captivating feature is this surreal Vegas -- its neon signs askew, as if reconfigured by Andy Warhol, and its preternaturally glistening streets a siren's call to an ever-new batch of suckers.

Francis Ford Coppola has reworked somewhat and meticulously restored his ambitious 1982 romantic musical fantasy One From the Heart, out of circulation for more than 20 years, but for all his efforts it stubbornly remains a bold experiment in style and technique that doesn't work.

A hybrid musical romantic fantasy, lavishing giddy heights of visual imagination and technical brilliance onto a wafer-thin story of true love turned sour, then sweet. (review of original release)

The movie looks great and sounds better, and its status as a pioneering work of cinematic eye candy seems secure. For one thing, it's hard to imagine ''Moulin Rouge'' without it. As a movie about recognizable human beings, however, One From the Heart remains a failure.

The actors do their best with their one-dimensional roles, and the film is worth seeing, if only to watch Garr, Harry Dean Stanton, and Allan Goorwitz. Tom Waits provided the Oscar-nominated score. (review of original release)

Pdem dem gave it a1:
Just because it's different doesn't make it good. In fact, it features some of the worst acting and writing that you can find from a director as respected as Francis Coppola. I can see why it bankrupted its studio.
Matt J. gave it a 10:
Simply one of the most bold and underrated films in the history of american cinema. It has re-shaped melodrama as a genre and unfortunatelly hasn't been seen as much as it should as many directors could learn from it... (if not even the director's daughter has learned - how poor can Lost in Translation be?)
Jim A. gave it a 10:
This is one of my favorite movies. I've only seen it on VHS until now. And I have been hopefully waiting for it to come out on DVD. I would search the movie rental stores for a copy to view, but in the last 10 years I have been unsuccessful in my pursuit. I have seen the VHS for sale from time to time on the Internet for no less than $80.00. I would continue my search from time to time. You never know, I could get lucky. Imagine my surprise to find it on DVD. I purchased it right away, before it got away. Then I discovered that it was released in theaters! Sadly I missed the theater showing. I have the DVD now. I am a very happy man. Thank you Mr. Coppola for an excellent movie. I'm truly sorry you had to sacrifice so much. I am glad however, that you did. Art is often like that, it seems. I have recommended and applauded this movie for the last 20 years.
Tony S. gave it an 8:
I loved Tom Waits music and the surreal sets. This movie is just beautiful to watch.
