The greatest adventure of all time begins with Star Trek, the incredible story of a young crew's maiden voyage onboard the most advanced starship ever created: the U.S.S. Enterprise. On a journey filled with action, comedy and cosmic peril, the new recruits must find a way to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind. The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. One, James T. Kirk, is a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy. The other, Spock, was raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. As fiery instinct clashes with calm reason, their unlikely but powerful partnership is the only thing capable of leading their crew through unimaginable danger, boldly going where no one has gone before! Not only does this Star Trek proffer smart thrills and slick kicks, but it builds upon the original's history–from its very first pilot episode to Robert Wise's 1979 "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and beyond–while creating an entirely new future.

This installment has achieved a nearly impossible hat trick. It's a movie that is exegetically correct enough to appease the most hard-core buffs, while opening up the final frontier to a whole new generation of fans who have yet to appreciate Star Trek's ineffable combination of sci-fi action, campy humor and yin-yang philosophical tussle between logic and emotion.

The clever and infectious reboot of the amazingly enduring sci-fi classic, director J.J. Abrams crafts an origin myth that avoids any hint of the origin doldrums. That's because he rewires us back into the original Star Trek's primal appeal.

Isn't just a pleasurable rethink of your geek uncle's favorite science-fiction series. It's also a testament to television's power as mythmaker, as a source for some of the fundamental stories we tell about ourselves, who we are and where we came from.

This new Star Trek is nonsense, no question ("Prepare the red matter!"), but at least it's not boggy nonsense, the way most of the other movies were, and it powers along, unheeding of its own absurdity, with a drive and a confidence that the producers of the original TV series might have smiled upon.

The movie deals with narrative housekeeping. Perhaps the next one will engage these characters in a more challenging and devious story, one more about testing their personalities than re-establishing them. In the meantime, you want space opera, you got it.

Doris B. gave it a10:
It is one of the best i have seen this should get an Oscar.

Tom M. gave it a10:
This movie surpassed my expectations. If you know nothing of the Trek legacy, it won't matter; see it anyway. The updated and more action-packed Trek worked for me. Be sure to watch this either in a theater or on a large TV screen with good sound and it will deliver epic popcorn perfection. The powerful opening battle scenes drew me in immediately and emotionally, and later in the movie there's enough humor to provide levity, namely Dr. McCoy's arsenal of injections. Most importantly for me, the main characters were properly cast (Spock, twice!) and well-developed, the script tight (didn't matter to me about the parallel universe), and the effects solid (unlike most movies where effects are everything and characters one-dimensional). Abrams and co. brought the swagger back and injected a faster pace to Trek (which might be slightly over the top for some viewers, esp. with some of the cliffhangers). Giacchino's riveting, brassy soundtrack, stirred with occasional harp glissandos, works to add dramatic flair. It's my favorite orchestral soundtrack in years. The editing is tight throughout, with one exception--I do wish the police scene with young Kirk had been cut and torched. Besides that, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Let the epic popcorn sc-fi movie do what it's supposed to--entertain, stimulate, and provide catharsis.

Rus gave it a0:
Disgustingly and absurdly dumb movie.

Fayt H. gave it a10:
I'm not a sci-fi person and I rarely enjoy this genre but Star Trek convinces me otherwise. With surprisingly great acting and solid (but enjoyable) plot, they managed to pull it off with such dominance I have to name it Best Film of 2009. Now waiting for the sequel.

Robert H gave it a10:
The best Star Trek movie yet! Even without the Borg, this movie was well written and well-executed through and through! Bravo!!

Peter J. gave it a9:
This is probably one of my favorite movies of the year. I actually took a point off because of Leonard Nemoy being in it though.

Bob N gave it a0:
Huge disappointment! I've watched Star Trek since the 60's and am a great fan. I was really psyched for this movie but hugely let down after watching it. As other critics here have mentioned, wonderful SFX, but contrived, formulaic and predictable plot and (except for Kirk, Spock, McCoy) virtually non-existent character development for the others. Plot also has inconsistencies, is not believable and diverging from established Star Trek 'history' is very unsatisfying. This is one of the few movies I've purchased.
