TV Guide Staff (Not Credited)

No other motion picture about Hollywood comes near Billy Wilder's searing, uncompromising and utterly fascinating portrait of the film community.

Performances by the entire cast, and particularly William Holden and Gloria Swanson, are exceptionally fine.

Village Voice Michael Atkinson

What's not recognized enough is the indelible, self-sickened performance of William Holden as Desmond's boy-toy/hired hack.

David S. gave it a10:
One of the most extraordinary filmed works ever made. The writing, acting, direction and photography are first class. The connection between the real Gloria Swanson and Max the butler is worth researching.

Brian E gave it a10:
This is seriously my favorite movie of all time. The writing is sooo good, it seems impossible that it came from just two people. Gloria Swanson is amazing in this and deserved the Oscar, as did William Holden. I loved every frame of it.

David W. gave it a10:
Loved it, every minute of it.

CC T gave it a 10:
One of the 10 best movies ever made. great story, great performance. a MASTERPIECE.

Ryan M. gave it a 9:
A dazzling look into the Hollywood universe and a gargantuan success at exploring the toll fame takes upon one.

Dan C. gave it a 10:
One of the ten best of all time!

Kathleen A. gave it a 10:
Classic - Nothing compares to it! What a shame that Gloria and Bill did not deservedly win the Best Actress and Best Actor Awards. Also "Best Picture" and "Best Director" for Wilder. Another of the "Academy's" famous, notable and many mistakes. Classic in every way.
