If you liked Castlevania: Lords of Shadows, you'll like Mirror of Fate. Mercury Steam succeed in combining the basis of Konami's reboot and some old stuffs from the early episodes. The result is ten hours of an intense and gripping adventure that will lead you to the end of Dracula's reign. The choice between four characters is very welcome, exactly like the renewal in the gameplay. A successful bet.

Castlevania isn’t brutish — it is a test of your agility and your willingness to overcome nearly impossible odds. Mirror of Fate really wants to dazzle you with clever puzzles and name dropping fan-favorite characters, but it can’t emulate the soul of the series.

Mirror of Fate is a good game, but it can disappoint fans used to the Metroidvania formula.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate is a game that tries to take the best of both new and old Castlevania but ultimately comes up short all round.
  5. Like Bram Stoker’s famous book Dracula, the source material on which the series is based, Castlevania continues to evolve and reinvent itself for new audiences.

If fans come in expecting something more like Castlevania IV than Symphony of the Night, they're in for a good experience. More than anything though, Mirror of Fate has me excited for Lords of Shadow 2.

After changing the longstanding mechanics of Castlevania with Lords of Shadow, MercurySteam managed to merge action and exploration in Mirror of Fate. The game is far from the Metroidvania style but in exchange offers many hours of intense combat, and a story that studies in the Belmont family mythology. If only the platforming and puzzle solving were better, this could be the perfect successor to Symphony of the Night; but unfortunately it is not but it's a great 3DS game and a thrilling interlude while we wait for Lords of Shadows 2.
  8. Purists will be pleased, then, with Mirror of Fate for the Nintendo 3DS. Although excessively subtitled, it’s a return to the series’ two-dimensional side-scrolling roots, which is both a good and a bad thing. While the exploration and clever puzzle-solving is front and centre again, so too is an unfortunate side effect – a healthy dose of backtracking.

    This game is AMAZING..
One of the best looking 3DS game and its a very good mix of OLD eps like Castlevania 3 or 4 and LOS, with some
    Metroidvania features.
Its really challenging, you will die a lot before you learn how to beat the ennemies and the QTE are not over-intruisive. The story is ok, but there is a lips synch issue on the cut scene..
If you ONLY played the Metroidvania, maybe you will not like it on first attempt(you will if you get over what you except of such an episode)

Anyway, it's a shame to not at least try this Castlevania before judging it, you will probably miss on of the good exclusive title in 3DS.

I'll try to be simple: i) graphics: 9.5 ii) sound: 9 iii) script: 8 iv) art (if the game has a soul): 10 Castlevania at its best. The game resembles the NES and SNES Castlevanias (in a Lords of Shadows approach, of course). If you have a 3DS, don't miss this excelent game! Full Review »
