Minecraft: New 3DS Edition is a surprisingly competent version of the game despite its obvious limitations. However, the draw distances are terrible, multiplayer isn’t available at the beginning, and it won’t stack up to the console versions. If you truly want Minecraft on the go and own a Nintendo Switch, I suggest buying that version instead as it is the same price and, unlike the New Nintendo 3DS Edition, it will be receiving the Better Together Update this Winter.

Minecraft New 3DS Edition isn’t a bad game at all—at its core it’s still the same brilliantly addictive creativity sandbox. That said, its complete lack of multiplayer and the availability of the vastly superior Nintendo Switch version for the same price unfortunately makes Minecraft on 3DS functionally obsolete.

There are already so many different ways to play Minecraft, and the 3DS version fails to live up to the standards set by the other versions. It’s not a bad slice of pizza, but there are so many better choices.

The title of “New Nintendo 3DS Edition” is a misnomer as there is nothing here that makes this edition any more special than those already available. And now that we know it will not be included in the Better Together cross-play campaign, it almost feels dead on arrival. There is a chance, down the line, Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition will actually be worth its asking price, but that time is not now.

As someone who's played every version of Minecraft to date, this New 3DS edition is the one I'm going to come back to the least. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 28E]

Overall, Minecraft on New 3DS is exactly what I imagined it to be: a portable version of a game we’ve all played several times. If you’re in the market for a portable version of Minecraft, just get it on Nintendo’s newest system, the Switch.

While many asked for the game on 3DS, the wait has dimmed most of those hopes, and now the game simply arrives too late to be worth it for most gamers. If the price drops and the 3DS is the single platform that you have as a Minecraft option, then sure, it's pretty decent. However, if you have any other way to play the game then it's likely better.

There are those who will say unto you that because the "phone" version is cheaper and runs smoother, its better. Some will pass, saying, "Minecraft Switch" has the Better Together" update, and is portable too, so its better." But verily, I say unto you, "Minecraft N3DS" works, has acceptable framerate, and isn't an incomplete game. I may be biased toward the franchise, but still. Buy It. Expand

It now has the Wither and ocean monuments / elder guardians, making it equivalent to Pocket Edition Alpha 0.16.2. More recently, update 1.4 even added a local multiplayer option. It's true that the N3DS Edition will not receive the Better Together Update. However, as much as I do love Bedrock, the BTU isn't exactly a critical update as far as key core features go. As for the game itself, it does have a low draw distance and some framerate issues, performing a bit worse than Java overall. However, it is still very playable. It does lack the ability to load in custom skins. It comes with several skin packs to help make up for this, however. What I enjoy most about the N3DS edition is that it's a truly portable Minecraft edition that doesn't rely on touch controls or drain the battery of your primary communication device, as Bedrock (formerly Pocket Edition) does on phones. The Switch is technically portable, but too large to fit in a pocket or purse, making it a poor substitute for on-the-go Minecrafting. Perhaps the most unique feature of this edition is a free and constantly-visible map, with coordinates, on the bottom screen. With the lower draw distance, this is essential for not getting lost, as the worlds aren't quite as small here as they were in legacy console editions. This is a great edition to buy if you have a N3DS (or N2DS) and want to play Minecraft on the go, but dislike the touch controls of PE or your phone isn't beefy enough to handle it. Expand

This version is a wonderful addition to the others. The portability makes it unique, and instead of crafting Items like The Crafting Table or the map, They will readily be available on the touch screen. The touch screen also has the map scale as well , and i really love the fact you can craft with the touch screen. However its quite disappointing that it is not compatible with the 3D option, and render distance is quite short. There are frame rate problems/issues now and then, but this doesn't stop Minecraft for the New Nintendo 3DS from being a wonderful title. Expand

However, thisMinecraft New 3DS edition is exactly what you expect, it's fun and creative like any other platform of Minecraft but portable. However, this version crashes occasionally if I play too long, you can fall endlessly in creative, and the other problem is saving your game is a bit inconsistent, like if I die and lose all my items I can't exit the game and come back to my last save, if I do then the data with all my items and enchantment level gone and back to the re spawn area. Even so, this version of Minecraft is still enjoyable, I don't need maps, the controls are fine and adjustable, no lag, and it doesn't look like a downgraded version of Minecraft at all. So if you want to have Minecraft on the go, the new 3DS edition is acceptable, or the Switch edition is also option. Expand

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Minecraft for the 3DS? Cool, but not as good as other editions. This is ridiculous.

However the original 3ds and 2ds systems have a slightly slow cpu. If they made a version for the older 3ds they would make more money so why didn’t they make it? It is because the new 3ds Minecraft was rushed you can tell by the menus and gameplay. However if you want a better portable version of Minecraft I recommend getting it on the psvita or Nintendo switch. Expand
