If you're someone who has steered clear of Layton previously, Azran Legacy isn't going to convert you. This is a series that sticks to what it knows: challenging puzzles alongside a thoroughly charming adventure.

A great conclusion to a great trilogy, and hundreds of puzzles to keep you busy. Minigames from previous titles have been the highlight, but fall short in this final entry.

Level-5 insists this is the end of Professor Layton taking top billing. The franchise will continue in unknown directions, but The Azran Legacy offers a worthwhile conclusion that adheres closely to the same formula that made Layton so beloved.

Puzzle solving is a gentlemanly pursuit, one that will perhaps never be better personified than in Professor Layton and his inquiring entourage.

The first non-linear Layton game turns out to be one of the best. Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy is a selection of stories and puzzles well worth your time.

If you’re already a fan of the series, or if any of this niche game sounds appealing to you, I urge you to give Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy a try. Certainly, those who played the previous two (or five) games will want to know how the trilogy ends.

The last entry in the Layton series maintains the magic and the witty puzzles, and closes the saga with an interesting and mysterious storyline. If you loved the previous entries you'll love this one too, it's quite the closure.

Anyone who's a fan of Layton will find another great adventure. If you haven't had a chance to travel with the great Professor, this can be a great jumping off point to really get a good idea of what this series is all about.

While Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy offers little innovation or surprise, it’s still just as charming and entertaining as ever, and it’s a fitting end to a legacy of perplexing brainteasers.

What it does to differentiate itself from previous entries in the series is mostly superficial, but Layton fans and puzzle lovers do not really need or want a great departure for the series. All we want is a puzzle-solving adventure, and Azran Legacy delivers a good one.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy is a very pretty adventure, which uses various puzzles where other games would use action or fights. The puzzles should be a bit more in tune with the story and the locations, though. [Nov 2013]

If Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy really is the end of an era, it's a fitting sign-off. Hershel Layton and his companions have been wonderful additions to the DS and 3DS systems, bringing gracious simplicity and charm with each release.

Professor Layton is saying goodbye for a while, but not before finishing the Azran trilogy, that’s obviously been written for the Layton connoisseurs. Thanks to its detailed appearance and atmospheric world you’ll forgive it for its somewhat recognizable puzzles.

As this is a prequel and the fate of many characters is already well known, Azran Legacy can’t really hope to compete with the emotional gravity of Lost Future. However, it is an intelligent and engaging addition to the series, bringing together the best of the new and old.
  26. 70
Not the best entry in the series, but it does have some of the best puzzles. As well as a bombastic, if slightly confused, story that will leave both new and old fans wanting more.

Although it's too familiar for its own good, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy is a fine conclusion for the series, at least for the time being. With a fresh story, solid presentation and plenty of puzzles and challenges, this is one mystery that doesn't wear out its welcome.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy may not reset your thoughts on the series, but it’s still an excellent game in a long-running series, and even people who’ve never played a game in the franchise can enjoy their experiences with the game.

Layton says goodbye with a grand story in a game that feels like a compilation of the best elements of the fantastic Level 5 puzzle saga.

On top of providing more investigation perspectives, elevation gives more freedom to explore the world. That's why an airship helps Professor Layton refining his methods, while Level-5 improves the narrative through this less linear and more deeply moving journey. Thus, the Azran Legacy stands as an accomplished conclusion, not only for the trilogy, but for the series as whole, now ready to venture into new horizons.

The last game with Professor Layton as it’s main characters offers great puzzles and improvements to the series core gameplay. Level5 could probably have invested more in the cut-scenes and voice acting since the dialogue text kind of drags. But in all, a must for lovers of Layton.

Layton’s newest legend entertains with smart puzzles and a somewhat standard story. It’s too bad it’s very much stuck in its old ways, but it does offer some very clever puzzles that’ll ask the most of your thinking capacity.

All in all, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy shows there is still plenty of mileage in the series, but as time has been called on this particular line of Hershel Layton adventures, it proves to be a fitting closure with some great twists at the story's conclusion, along with clever plot elements that tie this precursor trilogy back into the first ever game, The Curious Village.

Hershel Layton said goodbye with dignity of his own, and even for the sixth time he's capable to deliver the entertaining adventure game full of puzzles. On the other hand, the bell tolls for the professor already, and because of the constantly recycled content his latest adventure is unnecessarily dull.

For those that are completists, who want to eke every drop out of their Layton, there is a staggering amount of depth here, not just from the multiple puzzles, but from the way all of the mini-games are directly tied into the main adventure, and the Treasure Hunt mode can actually provide a beneficial reason to keep your idling 3DS in your pocket, lest you have a cheeky StreetPass encounter that will unlock a juicy reward.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, is a great, even perspective changing game that showed me that games don’t need endless action to be fun.

With the most puzzles in series history, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy will force players to rack their brains, and the Professor and his crew are as lovable as ever. Unfortunately, the prequel limitations really put a crimp on the overall narrative.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy is what it has been made for. A very accomplished story and a huge number of new puzzles make of this episode a safe bet for the fans. There is therefore a dearth of new features. But this final episode will satisfy newcomers and old fans.

An amazing conclusion to the beloved puzzle series. Its variety and clever storytelling make it the most interesting and well-executed installment of the franchise, and it’s nice to see that after six games, Level-5 can keep surprising players with intriguing, surprisingly moving plots and hundreds of clever puzzles.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy follows a grand tradition of puzzle-adventures. Filled to the brim with brain teasers of all shapes and sizes, The Azran Legacy is a relatively non-linear exploration of the series' last mysteries. Will you like it? It depends. How much do you enjoy having your mental processes challenged?

Despite some excellent puzzle design and classic Layton aesthetics, it doesn't always feel like the game takes advantage of what the 3DS can do. Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy is a fantastic addition to the franchise. A must have for any puzzle lover.

Clever puzzles and superb music and animation mixed with a compelling story and a less linear structure put this among the very best Layton games out there, and up with the best games on the 3DS. It also includes some of the best visuals on the system. Despite a slower start than usual, the story is great and cleverly connects the two trilogies without leaving many loose ends. 365 daily puzzles plus StreetPass content leaves plenty to do after the 9-12 hour main story.
