  1. Bangai-O takes established, classic gameplay elements and combines them with its own innovations, with the end result being one of the most enjoyable games in recent memory.

  3. Games like this, where the graphics take a back seat to the gameplay, are few and far between these days, but Treasure, much like Sega, knows that gameplay is everything.

40+ friggin levels! 40 LEVELS! And there's something really addicting when you combine frenzied shooting and fruit collecting together.

  7. Not a game for everyone, but fans of 2D shooters and developer Treasure will definitely want to pick up a copy of Bangai-O.

  9. While the game's nothing less than explosive, it's quite quirky, too -- strange characters, stranger situations and an unusual emphasis on fruit make this... well, the fruitiest shooter we've seen in some time.

  11. I've been playing Bangai-O for a week now, and I still don't know what the hell is going on half the time...Look, you'll either love or hate Bangai-O, and either way, it's extremely unlikely you'll ever understand it.

  13. For somebody who doesn't play many shooters and is not "hardcore," I had a blast with Bangai-O... It does what it sets out to do very well.

  15. In an age of thick productions and thin gameplay, Bangai-O really has it where it counts: in truly compelling and addictive gameplay.

While trumped by Treasure's Ikaruga in popularity, Bangai-O remains one of the most innovative and genre-defiant experiences on the Dreamcast. It is a near-impeccable amalgam of concepts favored by some of gaming history's landmark titles, refined and reintroduced to the tune of a suitably bizarre story.

  21. We're hoping that by reading Gamestyle you're at least a little more interested in how good the actual game is rather than purely the aesthetics. Rest assured, then, that Bangai-O is brilliant.

  23. 100% shooting substance over visual style (although it looks damn pretty on its own 2D merits).

Alright, when I first saw this game in stores, I saw the huge robot and said "It's about time the Dreamcast got a robot game." Popped a look on the back, saw explosions everywhere, thought that was pretty dang cool. So I bought it. I have to admit, when I first started playing and saw the 2D graphics I was a little disappointed. However, once I got used to the somewhat akward controls and figured out what I was doing; I played for hours on end just nuking everything in site. If you have a Dreamcast and are in need of a good arcade style game, this is seriously the best game to buy. Don't let the 2D bring you down, the way it's done it has a beauty of its own. Great game, a lot of slow-downs. But I really don't care.

This is the greatest Dreamcast game - unbelievable shooting action - I would never have thought 2D on next gen consoles would be so appealing.
