Another lesson in how to take a franchise in different direction entirely - and with great effect in this particular case.
While the game is pretty easy and filled to the brim with Square Enix in-jokes, Rocket Slime is still some of the most fun you'll have on the Nintendo DS. It may not take advantage of the touch screen, which may turn some off to the game, but it is still a hell of a lot of fun to pick up and play.

Dragon quest heroes rocket slime for the nintendo ds is the single best game yet created. I'm not even capping. This random dq spinoff is the best game ever made. It's genuinely better that all the other triple a "best game ever" games. This isn't an opinion either, it's straight up a fact. The story is nothing to write home about (and neither is the music for the most part) but the gameplay is so good you'll have to wonder why you even play any other games in the first place. From exploring the over world to looting anything you can get your squishy blue body on is the most fun a video game can be. And then, just when you think it's over, they manage to make the game even better in the form of the kaiju tank battles. This game is the most fun you will have in your life. I genuinely like it better than some other actual good games I've played. If you dare even SUGGEST that dragon quest heroes rocket slime isn't a timeless classic whilst being a modern masterpiece, I will hurt you. I will shatter you like a pane of glass and run you over with the aforementioned kaiju tank. If this game isn't the best game you've ever played, I'll eat the sd card I have it stored on. It hurts me to think of all the people who'll go their entire life without playing the only good video game. I can't believe people are too busy playing league of legends and among us and other cringe games to realize that true fun hase been so close for so long. It's a ds game, so you can play it on literally anything now. You have no excuse. If I don't see a sudden resurgence in this ds game from 2009, I'm going to eat a table.

A great game that might not be pushing the DS visually, yet it's filled with great gameplay featuring deep tank battles and fast-paced action sections. No doubt, it will put a smile on your face for the ten hours or so that it lasts. [JPN Import]
The game is like candy. You’ll pop it in, have a blast playing it, and move on, only to break it out again when you get the itch for more lighthearted entertainment. Simply put, the game is fun, and nothing more really needs to be said.
Rocket Slime’s charm and variety of gameplay make it one of the absolute best for the DS, even if you’ve never played a Dragon Quest before.
Rocket Slime is a simple adventure packed with personality, puns, and an oddly endearing hero.
The game is incredibly repetitive. You get the standard different worlds of jungle, sand, sky, etc. but other than the colour palette and decor there wasn't anything unique about any of them.
This is truly a masterpiece, and one of the best games on the Nintendo DS. I love this game, and would highly recommend it to anyone. From exploring the overworld and rescuing slimes, to capturing monsters to gain their loyalty to use in tank battles, this game is truly amazing.

Cheerful graphics and sound, innovative gameplay and a hilarious plot and premise. And the tank battles are great fun too!
The only problem is the sheer lack of challenge. I didn't die once, and once I figured out the secret to utterly destroy enemies in tank battles (which I will not share here, as it's truly game destroying), I would often not even take a single point of damage throughout the whole battle.
Still, it's definitely one of the best games on the system, and well worth the $10 or so that it'll cost you.

This game was actually my introduction to the Dragon Quest franchise. I was intrigued at playing as a monster. I've enjoyed playing as the 'bad guy' since Super Mario RPG (even if Bowser was a bit slow for my taste). I found it entertaining, even if resource collection was a little bit of a pain. The story was not great, but I could tell it wasn't much more than an excuse to link battles and zones together. It was peppered with little details that added greatly to the atmosphere of the game as a whole (like loading your helpers into your cannons) The tank battles are fast, furious and frenzied, though the AI was a bit lacking in difficulty. If you are looking for something cerebral, you'll want to take a pass. 2-player versus tank battles with my wife ate up hour after hour for weeks, so grab it if you've got someone to link battle with.
