  1. A button-masher with a strategy-game pedigree, Koei's Dynasty Warriors DS: Fighter's Battle straddles the line between two genres with awkward balance. [Sep 2007, p.87]
  2. Easy, brief and lacking variety. A better DS version of this may arrive one day, but this remains strangely addictive all the same. [JPN Import; July 2007, p.51]
  3. However, Dynasty's old faults--poor AI and monotonous battling--are readily apparent. [July 2007, p.107]
  4. It's novel to see a mini version of a game that I first played when the PS2 launched. [Aug 2007, p.69]
  5. Rack up truly impressive body counts in ancient China, over and over again, for several hours.
  6. There simply isn’t enough variety in “Shin Sangoku Musou Fighters Battle DS” to keep the interest going. And why the developers didn’t use the touch screen where the game could have benefited is beyond me. [JPN Import]

Between the simple card system, the short length, and the anime look, Fighter's Battle feels like a game that was meant to get younger players interested in the Dynasty Warriors series. Longtime fans may be irked by these changes and the lack of a story, but it's still a DW game at heart.

A far better pocket experience than its GBA predecessor, but it still has issues, and while we're down with the new design some polish - and attention to detail, particularly in the graphical and A.I. portions of the game - is greatly needed. The concept is fun, it just needs some fine-tuning.
  9. A competent but ultimately soulless and uninspired slash 'em up that doesn't push the DS to anywhere near its full capabilities. [Oct 2007, p.94]
  10. 55
Given Fighter's Battle's very short single-player game (two hours at the most) and repetitive combat, it's a shame no minigames or alternate modes exist.
  11. I'm thinking Koei should've just dubbed this one My First Dynasty Warriors, as this romp through ancient China is ridiculously basic. [Aug 2007, p.81]
  12. The game is about trying to get through the simple fights just a bit faster than the other guy. We like that the other guy is a warlord with an infinite supply of loyal soldiers willing to die for him, but repetitive gameplay is a bit too much for us to bear.
  13. The gameplay works decently enough but it lacks any depth. The battle card system feels unimportant, and you'll blaze through the game in a day. Time to bury this dynasty in the history books.
  14. This multiplayer-focused, handheld distillation of the Dynasty Warriors formula is barely entertaining enough to sustain its two-hour length.
  15. It's too short, feels tired and repetitive – not unlike war, Fighter's Battle seems mostly futile.
  16. 35
It's Dynasty Warriors, but it's hideously ugly and devoid of content, and therefore not worth the two hours it takes to beat.
  17. There is simply nothing here worth playing, nothing here worth buying and it stands as yet one more clue (as if they need any more) that Koei needs to move on to greener pastures and bury this franchise once and for all.
