Natsume's attempt to marry the air combat and role-playing genres often feels underdeveloped and unpolished.

The manual flight controls are overly sensitive and take serious getting used to, forcing you to rely on autopilot. [Aug 2006, p.92]
It's a good flight simulator for the DS, but it feels incomplete and lacks difficulty.
As neat as the touch-screen controls are, they don't take attention away from the rest of Freedom Wings' faults. The whole thing feels like a 1990's shareware PC game; it loves to dole out its action in small chunks.
The Manual Mode is so madly uncontrollable that it isn't an option, making the only real option clicking on Auto and going off to make a cup of tea. [Nov 2006, p.77]
The controls are horribly touchy to the point that the only way to succeed in the game is to let the computer do all the work. And that, pretty much, goes against the very definition of a “game.”
