  1. What may be a surprise, however, is how poorly Madden NFL 2005 for the DS compares with some of its contemporaries on other platforms.
  2. While a pee-wee-sized version of Madden can't hope to compete with its big brothers, I'm amazed at all it does pack in, including solid gameplay, a decent season mode, instant replays, and PS1-level graphics.
  3. The records and trading are groundbreaking for a sports title and has set a standard for all sports games that will be released for the DS.
  4. 70
Even without a sense of spit and polish to the presentation, it's at least a solid playing game of football that offers way more in gameplay than what the Game Boy Advance is capable of pulling off.
  5. Cheat Code Central
While it has issues the game is a good football game complete with realistic fatigue and injuries. It certainly showed promise for the next version and sports games in general.
  6. GMR Magazine
While it does a lot right, it lacks the polish the series is known for. [Feb 2005, p.113]
  7. Though the DS touch screen screams to me “Customized playbook!” it must have been screaming something else to the developers.
  8. Perhaps the game was rushed to make the DS’s launch window, but whatever the reason it feels as if less effort went into this game than is typical of Madden games.
  9. And on defense, try rushing the quarterback. More often than not you'll go right past the QB or the running back as you try to turn your defensive lineman in towards the pocket. It's hard to do and frustrating.
  10. Nintendo Power
Player control is as good as ever, offering a wide selection of moves. [Feb 2005, p.114]
  11. Game Informer
Want to play football on the go? Take a piece of paper, fold it into a small triangle, and flick it into someone's face instead. [Jan 2005, p.144]
  12. Play Magazine
Graphically, I haven't seen this many jaggy looking players since the Genesis/SNES days. Player animations are also sub-par. [Jan 2005, p.85]
  13. The game doesn't have as many options as its console counterparts, and while it's cool that it's in 3D Madden's graphics look atrocious, but it's still an enjoyable football game.
  14. 60
For a handheld version, it ain't bad, but don't expect the same slick game you've been playing on the Xbox.
  15. games(TM)
Deep and rewarding, if physically a little uncomfortable to play on the DS, this game will set the tone for future EA titles. [Jan 2005, p.121]
  16. There is improvement to be had here, and given that the jungle drums are sending a message that Madden 2006 is on the way to the DS, we’re hoping that the developers can see where they’ve faltered and that they get a chance to try again.
  17. The season mode will provide a good amount of playtime, as will multiplayer competition, just do not expect anything beyond these two features as this year’s Madden on the DS is as bare-boned as it gets.
  18. Unfortunately, the lack of any sort of Franchise mode cripples the replayability, making this little more than a decent romp on the gridiron in between rest stops.

Superb for a portable version. True, the graphics aren't as good as the PS2, XBOX or GC but what do you expect. An excellent effort!
