It’s a solid turn-based strategy game that’s easy to pick up and fun to play, good for both fans and those new to the genre. The lack of multiplayer hurts, but it’s not a mortal wound.
Indeed the whole game is just a bit lacking - it has a decent story and excellent battles, but there is little replayability.
Destiny's Soldier is incredibly faithful to the traditional Mage Knight rules, but this, unfortunately, mostly serves as a reminder of how strategy games have evolved differently on and off of video game systems.
While the game succeeds as a conversion of a miniature gaming ruleset, it fails to take advantage of the potential available uniquely to the video game format. The lack of multiplayer in particular keeps Destiny's Soldier from rising in the ranks.
Mage Knight DS is based on some good design ideas derived from an interesting tabletop wargame, but they're drowned out by a poor interface and weak presentation.
A game that is likely to be frustrating to experienced players of the miniature game and nearly impossible to grasp for newcomers. [Dec 2006, p.157]
The crowning achievement of failure here, however, is the total lack of multiplayer. Skirmish would be nice, but no multiplayer in a DS version of an intrinsically multi-player tabletop game? Unforgivable.
