Control issues aside, Sega Superstars Tennis is swimming in clever game references and should be fun for even a casual Sega fan. [Apr 2008, p.89]
-
Strikes the right balance between proper tennis and mad stuff. [Issue#22, p.83]
-
As a happy-go-lucky bit of racket-fuelled froth it'll keep you pleasantly diverted. [June 2008, p.70]
-
70More than just a cash-in, but not quite perfect either, the title is nevertheless a great outing for a motley crew of Sega characters.
-
Control issues and a general lack of cohesion prevent Sega Superstars Tennis from totally stealing the show on Centre Court, but it nevertheless remains a commendable purchase.
-
Sure, it isn't as good as Mario Tennis, and occasionally the game feels a bit too linear, but ultimately you get what you pay for. With niche titles like this you were either excited about this from the start or never cared to begin with; let that be your guide.

69As solid a tennis game SEGA Superstars Tennis ended up on the Nintendo DS, it feels far more hollow than a celebratory "Yay us!" game should be.
-
66I was hoping for a seriously fun game, and while there were snippets of real enjoyment, the game has lulls that make you pine for some mini-games, and those lulls are the actual tennis portions of the game.
-
65The tennis is merely average, but Sega Superstars Tennis' challenges and minigames are creatively done and a lot of fun.
-
Fun minigames, but these can't keep the rest of the game afloat. [June 2008, p.83]
-
There is nothing wrong with Sega Superstars Tennis that six more months of development wouldn't have fixed. The game is not broken in any way; it's just graphically underdeveloped and retains control issues that make actually playing tennis against the computer an unfulfilling experience.
-
60Merely average, but worth a look for Sega fanboys and girls.
-
60Unlike Nintendo, SEGA have merely rehashed a collection of loved characters into a poor Virtua Tennis game.
-
A few interesting mini games are not enough to carry this overall bland tennis game.
-
60A casual affair. While the mini games are decent and perfectly suited to a handheld, the tennis part of the game is average.
-
60It should be noted that the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii versions offer a superior experience.
-
60Still, the nostalgia factor wears thin pretty quickly, and the tennis isn't deep enough to keep you playing this title longer than a couple of hours.
-
45An even larger frustration, though, is everyone's inability to recover lobs. In most tennis games, if you hustle you can often find some way to smack the ball back over the net, even if it's behind you. Here your characters just give up even if you are clearly within a reasonable rescue range.

I wonder what Segata Sanshiro would say if he were alive today. He was a commanding force who stood for playing hard until the score topped out or your fingers snapped under the pressure. More than that, he believed in the power of Sega, and so did I.
