  1. Super Mario Bros. was, is, and always will be a gaming masterpiece. Its oft imitated, yet rarely equaled combination of gameplay responsiveness, superb level design and visual flourish, combined with that special loving touch that only Miyamoto seems able to wield, makes it one of those rare games that seems to transcend time.
  2. For purists, this is the cream of the crop in retro goodness. [June 2004, p.138]

This is it, the game that brought video games in America back from the dead. [Summer 2004, p.15]
  4. I highly suggest you pick up this game, even if you have it on the NES.
  5. Nintendo Power

Although the graphics are clearly from another era, the gameplay and play control are as solid and enjoyable as those of any recent platform adventure. [July 2004, p.121]

Still a fantastic and amazingly fun design. But as a repackage, the Famicom Mini edition doesn't offer nearly as much as what was already given on the Game Boy Color.
  7. There's no question in my mind: If you've never played Super Mario Bros., you can't call yourself a gamer. This is a pretty decent way to get to know Mario and Luigi, but there are flashier ("Super Mario All-Stars") and deeper ("Super Mario Bros. Deluxe") ways to do it.

Now we get a single game whose only extras are wireless multiplayer and the ability to save high-scores... manually. Logically speaking, the next step will be to charge full price for incomplete versions of the game.

SMB's insane worlds, which beg exploration and conceptual absurdities, are anchored by intuitive controls and an innovative use of jump and slide physics, and midleap bending, culminating in a pinnacle of game design that redefined how video games were played. [July 2004, p.88]
  10. It would make a great gift idea for anyone who has yet to experience this venerable classic.
  11. Play Magazine

Still infinitely playable and impeccably designed. [Aug 2004, p.61]
  12. Still one of the best NES games ever, and perfect for the GBA.
