Despite a few structural flaws, Fortress is a fun way to kill little chunks of time.

  3. A very well executed game. Gameplay is tight, and the overall experience is a good one. However, the game is just too short.

  5. It’s a cute and solidly built game whose only downfall is that it may not appease a long-term appetite for many gamers.
  6. Freaky and entertaining, yet you'll note nowhere on that list can "addictive" be found.

  9. Simply put, the graphics are disappointing.

  11. A competitive puzzle-strategy game that answers the question, "What if Tetris were a battlefield?"

  13. Fortress is basically a good idea that got a bit fouled in the execution. [Nov 2001, p.131]

The game is missing so many gameplay necessities that it's difficult to recommend the game beyond the "borrow from a friend" level.

Although this game is influenced by two outstanding titles, the end result isn't so hot.
  18. Fun in spurts, but there's no way you'll play it for months on end. [Winter 2001, p.51]

  21. Barely on par with your average "Tetris" clone.

The problem with the game, aside from the derivative gameplay, is that the computer is way too competent, and can build faster.

A tutorial is ABSOLUTELY necessary for a game of this type, and I really am flabbergasted that there isn't one.

  27. The chief offence is the total lack of any tutorial modes to help flesh out the numerous nuances of the game. Within your first go, the chances of you understanding anything that is happening on-screen are akin to the chances of Mike Tyson giving up boxing to become a ballerina…as disturbing a thought as that may be.

  29. Little more than a convoluted, poorly executed variation on "Tetris."
