A culmination of intelligent programming, good game design and fun. The game is a technical marvel that must not only be seen, but heard.
-
The second [half of the game] - and arguably the more addictive - is the car customisation.
-
80An impressive debut of the legendary racing series on the GBA, sporting good graphics and sound and some surprisingly deep gameplay. It does have a few faults, and while it's not as engaging as its console version, it would be hard for me not to recommend this game.
-
The entire game looks better motionless if you want the truth. While the screenshots look great, you must keep in mind that as the scenery gets closer, it becomes a pixellated mess making it difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish where you're going.
-
79Had the game featured the same attention to detail as the graphics and racing engines in its presentation and features, Need for Speed Underground may have ended up the finest racer on the handheld.
-
77Warts and all, Need for Speed Underground is a good racing game--not because it's pretty, but because it's actually engaging and fun to play.
-
70Contains an impressive amount of depth, although graphical issues are severe enough to subtract from the overall experience. [Summer 2004, p.37]
-
The absense of a course map compounds the problem. [Mar 2004, p.120]
-
60If you can get by the issues caused by the limitations of the GBA, Need For Speed: Underground offers a solid racing experience for any GBA owner and features more replayability than its direct competition, thanks to the highly customisable cars and varied races.
