The excellent presentation and style is marred by the sixteen character password system and occasional level design flaws.
-
There's a really good game here trying to get out, unfortunately, the lightning wasn't captured in a bottle this time - it struck square on the head.
-
The game's play control and animation are a little rough, but overall, it provides lots of action and thrills. [Jan 2003, p.174]
-
It's a shame that Shinobi uses a password save, because I really would have dug this game if it wasn't for this blunder. [Feb 2003, p.110]
-
Rarely rises above the level of a typical side-scrolling combat title.
-
50The graphics are generic, but the audio presentation is quite nice. The GBA has a large library of average side-scrolling action games, and Revenge of Shinobi is just a slight notch above them.
-
46Even diehard Shinobi fans wont derive a great deal of entertainment from this one. It hurts to say it, but Shinobi truly has fallen from grace.
-
43Doesn't possess anywhere near the level of polish or charm of its Genesis namesake.
-
40Isn't a complete disaster, but it's undoubtedly the worst outing in the franchise's history. Its unresponsive controls and shallow gameplay are what holds it back from seeing its true potential.
-
32A disgrace. The only thing 3D6 Games has succeeded in (besides going out of business) is creating the worst Shinobi game ever, one which will turn away potential new fans and make old ones weep.
-
30The game quickly becomes boring and has you wishing you were doing something else.
