  1. The biggest problem is that there is no online gameplay. And for the more experienced and hardcore adult gamer, this game will get boring very quick[ly].
  2. Sonic is more suited to 3D platformers than racing, even if he is the fastest thing out there.
  3. Endure the few inevitable instances of frustration and your left with a solid sonic spin-off.
  4. The amount of variety is good, with lots of powerups, goodies in the gear shop, and all sorts of different gaming modes for single or multi-player. But the tracks are schizophrenic, and uneven in design. Some are frustrating, and some are too easy.

SR is packed with mostly quirky nuances that take time(and a little frustration)to master, often resulting in races being determined by track memorization as much as mastery of your particular racer's strength's and weaknesses as they pertain to each wild ride. [Apr 2006, p.63]

On the whole Sonic Riders is enjoyable, but could have been much more. It needs less attitude and more solid gameplay.
  7. Poor play control, non-threatening AI, and a story that is inconsistent with previous Sonic games and ultimately befuddling (which is quickly becoming the new standard for Sonic.)
  8. Sonic Riders can occasionally be quite entertaining, but too many of those moments are overridden by bouts of frustration and weak mechanics.

It's not as bad as Shadow the Hedgehog (thank god) and is hopefully a step in the right direction for a character that continues to be stuck in a bit of a rut.

Sonic is one of the fastest videogame mascots alive, so why has he been made to ride a sluggish snowboard in this new racer?
  11. Sonic Riders tries to do something new with racing but in the end doesn't deliver a polished package.
  12. While not the deepest racer, the game has speedy thrills and frantic multiplayer action that help bring Sonic's usual racing antics and signature speed to the sky.

Simply a weak attempt to cash in on the popular Sonic brand with a bare bones racer that simply does everything to the "average" degree.

Sure, you've got to pull off a few tricks here and there to keep up your momentum, but "SSX" it ain't. [Apr 2006, p.96]
  15. Sonic fans may fill their need for speed here, but everyone else, please walk on.

There is little depth to the control of the boards, and we don't see why this shouldn't have been an on-foot racer. [Apr 2006, p.106]

The general feeling this game conveys is confusion and chaos, akin to being flushed down a jet-powered toilet. [Apr 2006, p.118]

If you or a kid you know loves Sonic, this game will suit your purposes just fine. If you don't love Sonic, but love any racing title you can get, then check it out. If you don't fall into either of those categories, then we're sure you're probably not even reading this review.
  19. Sonic Riders tries to put some zesty racing action on the line here, but suffers due to inadequate gameplay and the kind of AI that makes you want to bash your controller into pieces with a hammer.
  20. It offers interesting gameplay mechanics and a ton of modes, but the pieces don't fit together well, making this mascot racer better suited for a weekend drag race than a 500 lap cruise.
  21. A mediocre racer for a single person with a multiplayer mode that is too difficult for the very casual player.

What could have been a fun, enjoyable racer is turned into tedium by an unnecessarily high difficulty level. SonicTeam seemed to think they What could have been a fun, enjoyable racer is turned into tedium by an unnecessarily high difficulty level. SonicTeam seemed to think they were making F-Zero instead of a Sonic spinoff. Unfortunately, this isn't nearly as good as F-Zero. Once you learn the controls, (which takes a while) the game provides some thrills and funny cutscenes, but overall, there's just no reason to play it. Full Review »

This game is in a league of its own with its racing style that combines the best of surfing, biking, skating, and many other extreme sports. Full Review »

Not the best spinoff but I do like the story but again it's a spinoff. The controls feel good the graphics are good. Even though I like Zero Gravity a bit better this game is still good but not perfect. I don't know if I would recommend this game or not. Full Review »
