It's cute, but once you get past the first few levels it becomes very hard. I've been trying to go through level 6 for hours and keep dying.

Its a platformer game with some really good elements, but with its super hard difficulty, it misses its audience, and gets you frustrated really quick. You would think, that this game is for kids, and you're probably right too, but you will realise after 10 minutes of playtime, that something is way off here. The game has some major camera problems sometimes, and the feeling of depth does not help you as much as you would expect from a 3D platformer, Collision detection is also sometimes your enemy, and sometimes your best friend, its a matter of luck really. There are several trial and error moments, where the game slaps you in your face, and sometimes it rewards you for dieing by giving you an extra life or two immediately. If you like challenges, this is a great game to test your several capabilities and your nerves. The graphics are mediocre, but the artistic style of the game is spot on. And the developers knew that, so they retextured some levels , and put it in twice , to make sure that you will take time to look at them. The enemy characters are a bit repetitive and the level design makes you pray for a checkpoint sometimes. The story is somewhat stupid, but its not a game where you would care about a strong story. The controls are OK, the music, voices are also ok, nothing special, but feels right for the concept.
Overall, its an OK 3D platformer, but very far from perfect. If you consider yourself a tough player, try yourself out with this one.

  1. If it weren’t for the beautiful Burton-esque influence of the art direction, Spirits and Spells would just be yet another bargain bin title that isn’t worth even a second glance.
  2. This game is too linear. You can’t stray off the patch and the fixed camera teases with a look at a delightfully rendered world, then locks you from at least seeing it from a panoramic perspective.
  3. While Spirits and Spells has a great visual style and an appropriate, if repetitive, soundtrack, it is definitely a flawed game.
