  • Summary: Jump into the cockpits of the Navy's top planes with Top Gun: Combat Zones. With the F-14, F-18, and F-22 under your control, you must embark on dangerous low-level missions throughout hazardous canyons and across vast cityscapes. Eliminate ground or air targets in Southeast Asia, Gulf States, Arctic Circle, and Miramar Base. The game offers 36 intense missions and a replay mode that lets you review each one through different camera angles. Collapse

The lack of a strong storyline or multiplay hurt the game, though, as do the controller options, which leave you with a choice between the far too simplistic and the overly complex.
  2. Entertaining at times, frustrating at others, Top Gun never really picks gamers up and takes them away.
  3. The graphics vary wildly from very nice when you’re up high doing a bombing run to absolutely horrible when you get near the ground – what the hell is pop-up doing on a Gamecube?
  4. The tuning issues associated with the PS2 version have been ironed out and the overall presentation - frame-rate, control, balance, etc. - have all been aptly tweaked for the GameCube version. [Nov 2002, p.96]
  5. Overall, gameplay is its strength, but overall, it doesn’t seem to be up to par with its competitors, especially when drawing a player in.
  6. An average game, which could have been improved with better mission structure, variety and additional modes.
  7. 40
It’s obvious that the game is garbage, but what makes it worse is the blatant descent from the developers. Everything from the “sweet still shots” to the marketing of how great the “low level combat” was is all a complete lie and Digital Impressions should be ashamed for using cheap tactics merely to sell a few copies of their game.
